China's not so new assult rifle - QBZ95

Probably couldn't be confused with any variant here in Canada, stock integral for function, hmmmm, looks promising for import.

You are correct. Not a variant. First guy who says so now gets a swift kick in the jam.

I was wondering when they were going to issue these things beyond Hong Kong. Apparently they had them going into the city back in '97. The ergonomics of it never struck me as a concern so much as the new round they are using for it, 5.85mm Chinese.

Also, I noted the comments about the blue helmet brigade, but nobody mentioned the black fatigues! :)

Cocking handle in the middle, similar to the FAMAS, AR mags, M9 bayonet, and a G.L. .

Add SA80 look to the mix & perhaps put the Wal-Mart logo on the receiver to complete the long list. Like everything else made in People's Republic, this ugly mother looks to be a typical copyright & pattern infringement knock off of the original western invention. Terribly uninspiring.

What a ####ty looking rifle. They did a better job at designing that SUV that got a 0 star safety rating! :D

Yeah but it probably uses top quality steel...not to mention the famous durability of chinese plastic components.

I dunno. I like stuff that works.

There is very little in today's gun world that is new and hasn't been "borrowed" from some other design. Appears to me that they just took stuff from other systems and incorporated them into their own.

Lots of other manufacturers have done the same, ie. Galil.

I am not a big fan of any bullpup design, but I don't think this is ugly.

And as long as they used quality parts and material, this may have some promise.

So are you only allowed to be right handed in the Chinese military?

Hmm... you'd think they'd learn from the fiasco that is the SA80...

Yes!

Considering that on the mainland it is common practice to force southpaw children to become right handed, I can't see that being much of an issue...

it wasn't that long ago that canada ( specifically bc) forced us lefties to conform as well- we moved to alberta, but not before the damage was done- i'm about as dominant left as you can get, but i was taught to write right, that's one reason my writing is so poor and it's awfully hard to unlearn-

From the land that dictates how many children you can have/ what you can say or print/ economic growth above ALL ELSE, you think they worry about which hand you are supposed to run the chopsticks with.

SIMPLIFY.... in the truest sense of the word. Gear and troops...all working with the same hand. The rest can go build DVD players.

The one thing I will give the Chinese is that they are very thorough. They have no reason to fit any past agenda or critical opposition. They have a need, they build it, no discussion or special interest groups to satisfy...Simplify.

As fugly as that is, I bet it is extremely functional for their Asian build. Unlike the US, they have adopted the far more effective bullpuppy platform (no debates needed, many armies around the world are switching to this style). One hand auto fire capable, well balanced, very compact and short but still retaining the longer barrel needed to make the bullet work.

That bullet/cartridge fits their design parameters not the concensus of half the globe or the manf capabilities of bullet makers. One cartridge for almost every long arm the foot soldier is going to field. Simplify...

They use the Russian arms design philosophy - simple effective and durable. I am sure that this rifle does all of the above. You trying to tell me the Mosin Nagant is a ###y bolt rifle or the AK pretty?

As much as having a rifle fit the lefty soldier sounds nice, I have to agree with the right hand only policy. What happens when your special lefty rifle jams and you need to keep in the fight with a righty rifle? Is a firefight the time to try and learn how to shoot from the wrong side?

Makes as much sense as having one soldier in every squad use a different cartridge in their rifle. Oops, we do that....

I personally examed some of these rifles at a PLA open day two years ago when I was on vacation in the far east. THey are pretty decent....compared to the crappy AR15 clone.

and you didn't take pix?

US style PASGT helmet. PVS 14 type night vision mount. Woodland BDU & assault vest. What's next? Humvee & M1A knock offs? Can't the Chicoms at least be a bit more original & come up with their own invention instead of keep copying others?
