got this Gew 88 for my Chinese collection. its got really nice stock marking and i was able to get some of them translated. I am thinking this is a vet bring back from Korea. i am reading a book on the chinese in korea and Henan was a major center where troops were taken from early in the war. also might explain why some one would scratch in the name of their town. the markings translated are this: 滎陽 Xingyang( capital of Henan Province) this is the part that is scratched in 东大村 Dongdacun, Fengqiu, Xinxiang, Henan.

have a look at the photos.

Very nice clear stock cartouches!

It might also be a boxer rebellion rifle, a number of various Chinese arms were imported to the USA over the years. Either way, it’s a very unique Gew 88 :)

it came with a turkish marked bolt with the gas block upgrade. i am looking for an older bolt to match the gun proper.

you can tell it has seen hard service but its to bad i cant date it because the markings have worn off.

I would love to see Chines manufactured version of Gew 88.I heard all of those that made it to Canada are worn out beyond recognition from hard use,not from bad storage.

I see them from time to time in Chinese films, some are blank firing examples, some dummy props with operating "bolt"(or dewats?),lots are badly beaten props just for carrying around.

^ Yes, the actual Chinese variant did not have barrel jacket.

However the Chinese had literally tens of thousands of Gew 88 rifles in their inventories. They also reworked many and so various Chinese variants exist. I’ve seen German Gew 88 parts built on Chinese domestic produced receivers.

When you don't have cash for new arms but have many skilled hands you will end up fixing old ones.Finns did this,Russians did this,Chinese did this for very long time as well.

What I find interesting is how Chinese never found fault with Mannlicher enbloc. All of their Gew 88 and Hanyang 88 use them and were never converted like German examples.

This is a good point, I wonder if the Chinese produced their own en bloc clips, or just relied on the large quantities in ammunition stocks. This is something the Paul S. Scarlata Gew 88 book does not touch on, although it does mention on page 151 that a carbine variant was also produced by the Chinese.

i have not seen a hanyang 88 myself but if i did i would pick one up. this gun is also shot out. its had very hard use.
as for the enblock i think they kept them because they did not adopt the mauser system till later on and by that time they were getting rid of the 88s as front line guns so no need to even convert them.
