Hello GunNutz,

Kindly asking for your expert advise.
I would like to buy a centerfire semi-auto rifle and thinking about getting SKS with tactical stock - because it is cheap, because stock can be adjusted (I am a tall guy), and because of cheap ammo.
Which one would be better (reliability and precision) Chinese Military Type 56 (sold by Marstar) or Russian SKS (sold by many stores)?
Also I have doubts about SKS rifles quality so what kind of similar but better quality rifle would you suggest (similar caliber, ammo price, rifle price)? May be little bit more expensive but better quality.
Sorry if my questions sound stupid - that would be my first rifle.
Thank you in advance

SKS is not a pretty rifle nor is it very refined but its is a quality firearm and you simply CANNOT go wrong buying one. I like my SKSs made in Russia but there isn't anything wrong with a Chinese model.

Not that I shoot them much but I think my Type 56 has better quality parts than my russian sks.. (other than the wood, which I refinished with tung)

A Russian SKS after 1951 and all Chinese SKS' will have chromed bores.

I have one of each. (3 in total) My Russian feels a little better when shooting, but my Chinese seems to be more accurate.

thank you all for suggestions.
would you suggest to use it with iron sights or to install a scope? Wikipedia says SKS's Effective range is 400 metres (440 yd).
if it makes sense to use a scope what magnitude should it have? Marstar sells it with a scope with magnitude 9 (3-9X42 P4 Sniper Scope [NcS-SEECR3942R]) but my friend says it is not enough.
may be for the short range (this rifle was created for combat 300m and closer I think) this scope is ok?

again thank you everyone for advices

What are you using it for? I see you posted in "hunting and sporting arms", are you hunting with it? If so, the "cheap ammo'' angle gets a little fuzzy. Surplus ammo is ball.

I would just leave the gun as it came from the factory.

BTW- the scope you linked to is an NCstar which is chinese for "absolute garbage"

I will be shooting at the range only, bollox.

I would prefer to tactify it as length of pull of SKS is short and can be adjusted on Tapco or ATI stocks.

what scope would you recommend instead (if any)?

I haven't had any issues with the TAPCO. I have heard some of the ATI folding stocks have too much play in the joint where it folds.

I bought a Chinese SKS back in '94 "new" (whatever that really means). It was supposed to be for my girlfriend at the time because she was short, I figured it'd fit her well. Lucky for me I never gave it to her and hung onto it. Only took it out to the range for the first time just last year. But as I am also quite tall (6' 5") I put a tapco stock on it for the extra LOP. Of course I can put it back to original configuration if need be but I like the tapco stock.

That being said, I just bought a Russian SKS today as my local CT has them sale on. This one is not going to be modified in any way. I'll shoot it and just deal with the short LOP.

I guess what I'm saying is if you're going to put a tapco/ati stock on it (and you should if you're tall) get a Chinese first. Then once you're hooked (and you will be) buy a Russian!

You don't need to tactify it. The plastic tactical skses I have looked at were too muzzle heavy. Easiest option: get a 2" butt pad spacer for $15.
Otherwise, try to get a timbersmith stock (laminated). They are really nice quality, but $$.
For sights, get the tech sight ts-200.

I've got a chinese and a russian, you choose, both are excellent. I would probably go with an ishevsk refurb or unissued if was just after one sks. weimajack on cgn usually has some nice ones.
PM me if you want more information.

Normally I would say buy the one with the nicest looking stock, I prefer the look of the Russian finish ones over Chinese ones, but if your gonna tac it out just get what's cheapest locally.

I found much of the same thing. I did like the ability to change the LOP on the TAPCO, but i got a buttpad for the wood stock (i believe mine is 1" spacer) and since then i prefer the wood stock with spacer to the tapco. The wood stock is a bit heavier, but it feels better balanced, where the lighter TAPCO is more muzzle heavy.

How tall are you (if you don't mind me asking). I found the LOP on my Chinese was 3 to 4 inches too short which is why (for me) I discounted the idea of a butted vs. the tapco stock.

Yes the Tapco is front heavy, but the LOP is nice so it's a trade off I guess.

I balanced the weight of my Chinese Tapco SKS by putting fishing weights in the stock's storage tube. I managed to get around 8-10 of the large sinkers in there along with some small cotton rags to absorb any rattle. I also snipped off the brass eyelets that were on the weights to prevent noise. Pushed them all snug down with a pen and sealed it up. It added some nice weight and heft to the rifle. It feels more balanced.

6'2" and arms just longer than standard sized sleeves on shirts (i usually have to get tall sizes for sleeve length). The pad i got looks identical to the one, but it's on a russian, not sure if chinese stocks are shorter.

This 2" one is available thru amazon.ca.

1" isn't quite enough even for me, and I am not exactly 6'2"

Thanks for the link, I just bought one on Amazon. I like the idea of slip-on so I can keep the rifle completely stock.

It's not an exact slip on match, but it has holes for the screws. i just backed out the original screws, put the pad on, then tighten the same screws back in again, works great that way.
