Chinese or Russian

Before the big gun grab in 1998, I was fortunate to muck around with a number of military semi-autos including a Russian SKS and a Chinese SKK (with a Kalashnikov 30 round magazine). The Russian rifle surpassed the Chinese copy.

Same applies to the Nagants too. The metallurgy, fit and finish of Finnish, Polish, Romanian and Russian rifles surpassed the Chinese made Nagants.

Now the Australian market is being flooded with these Chinese made IAC 1887 lever action shotguns,... complete rubbish! You would be miles ahead with a Russian Baikal SxS.

So, how about the stamped parts (trigger gard)?
the overall finish?
and especially the wood on the stock?
Can you in all honesty say, that the Chinese are equal to the Russian SKS ?

Yes, I certainly can for SOME Chinese SKS rifles. It depends greatly on the factory that made it and the year it was made.

The recent Factory 306 rifles, for example, are excellent. The trigger guard is stamped, but that does not affect function in any way.

what are the differences between the 625 and 306 chinese? Are they both short collar threaded barrels? stamped parts?

I do agree that the craftsmanship of the Russians are A+ (depending of the state of the refurb). I've never been fans of the wood on the Chinese, but they do make a fine shooting rifle.

If I was buying to shoot and collect, I'd buy a Russian. If I'm buying to shoot/more practical reasons, I'd look at one of the NEW/unrefurb'd Chinese.

I think you have to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. If you are comparing to 1990's Norinco Chinese SKS to the Military Chinese SKS's that are sold today you just can't do it. They are totally different between the two of them, fit and finish and overall appearance but they both shoot pretty good. I have not had a bad shooting SKS yet Russian or Chinese. The only difference between the new Chinese rifles today and the Russian refurbs is purely "Cosmetic". It does not matter if it is a stamped or milled trigger assy they all function the same. I have to admit the new Chinese SKS triggers I have done start out way better than the Russians refurb's. You can't go wrong with either one. The best bang for the buck out there right now on nice looking Russian refurb's and Brand New Chinese SKS's is Weimajack and Ki11ercane both CGN dealers.

Chinese SKSs are complete crap, just like my junky Factory 26.

That was sarcasm.

My /26\ is as nice as any Russian as far as fit and finish go. It's all milled and deeply blued. It's way nicer than my Russian black-bolt refurb. About the only thing I see as usually being nicer with the Russian guns is the laminate stocks. They're very pretty.

My point is that it's very hard to make blanket statements about which is better, Russian or Chinese. There's plenty of exceptions to any generalizations that can be made.

I bought a very nice non-refurb Russian. It's a good example. That being said I shoot my CZ858 :p. The SKS Russian was a nice example a non refurb and the price was right. I wanted it to round out my Red rifle collection. The CZ 858 however is a lot more fun to shoot.

I agree with epoxy,CZ is the way to go if you want russian. That being said for 200$ ANY SKS can't be beat. The main difference you will see in chineese vs. Russian is stock finish

I concur.
