Thats how I did it, not worth the headache to drill out the old pin and put in a new one. I have done it in the past but learned my lesson.

Ah yes, the hand guard. If I do the refurb I am not going to try and remove the metal from the wood, I will just work with the exposed wood.

I will also be cleaning up the handguard. At a later date I might look into getting an all metal, that I have seen on some of the other chinese models.

I stripped mine like you did and stained it with Minwax Early American 230. It looks better than the pics shows in person.
