Use a red dot on a quality mount for short distances. I use a bushnell red dot with quick release mounts or a 3x9 centerpoint on the casm ex mount with quick release rings as well. No issues with either optic holding up to the abuse.
This if you have the money!
If your on a regular guy budget here is my suggestion:
The m14 is already relatively heavy so a light scope should be in mind, you are planing mainly on 50 yard range so hight magnification is almost useless ( to me).
I would go with a m14.ca casm gen2 (aluminum) for a mount and a burris e1 2-7x35. It's inexpensive, it has a life time warranty and its tuff. The 2x makes quick work of anything from 10 yard to 100 and the 7x brings you easily to 300 yard and 500 if your douing your part.
Yes it's not as tacticool ( popular) has a 1-4 or a 8.5-25 but its a good compromise and its 210$

I would just like to add that I love that scope! There is really nothing to compare a true 1x for 0-25 yard on a moving target, but pushing almost 2000$ I don't see myself having one anytime soon. But the new burris xtr2 1.5-8x28 dual plane reticle is on my radar for my rfb.The CASM is probably the best mount out there... it's better than the LaRue mount that I have on my EBR.
I have used the aluminum & steel versions of the CASM, and both are rock solid.
My scope skills are lacking, so I went with the LT-608 because I didn't want to give up my irons on this rifle.
Most of my shooting is with iron sights and red dots. Choosing my one & only scope was not easy.
True 1x, clear glass, decent eye relief, big eye box, simple reticle, and decent magnification were all factors.
Price was also a factor, but selling off two cases of NATO surplus covered the purchase.

Yes a awesome deal!So $1100 was a good deal
I have read good things about Burris scopes...
Building an M305 will cost you a fortune that you will not get out if you decide to sell sometime down the road.
What harsh recoil is that? There's very little felt recoil. Whoever told you "it hits in two different directions" is very confused.
A 6.5-20X50 scope is far too much magnification and weight. 2.5x to 8x or a 3x to 9x is plenty. Mind you, you will get bored really fast at 50 yards and the muzzle blast will hurt.
