Choke help!!!

So last Christmas I got my oldest son a 20ga pump. I got him a maverick 88 compact in 20ga. I wish I could have spent more, but we have 5 kids and I was already stretching the budget. My son was as happy as could be. He practiced all year with clays to get good enough to shoot ducks with me. So Sunday the big mallards finally show up on my families farm. We knock down a nice pair of mallards. Afterward hes checking his gun and notices his choke. This weekend is his birthday and wanted to spend a day in the blind "smashing quacks". But his gun is out unless I can find him a choke(I have a back up/guest duck gun, but it's a full size 12ga). None of my LGS can get one for a couple weeks(incl cabelas, where I got it). So any body know of any dealers with one in stock? I should have bought a 870, maybe if this makes the season itll get traded in.20181113_222820.jpg

If we were closer I could fix it for you, trim off the damage and cut a shallow taper to blend it . Do you know anyone who is a good manual machinist?

Exactly, if the choke looks like that, what does the barrel look like? Are the barrel threads damaged? And what caused this, so it doesn't happen again?
 
It is a mod. Choke. I do have access to a lathe. I don't think that's right. There appears to be very little to no damage to barrel, a slight burr that could be buffed out. I will probably pop it by my gunsmith for further inspection. But he already told me he doesn't have a choke. So I my question is. Any one know where I can find one in the next couple days?20181114_070950.jpg

This would be my first question, i'm not sure what comes with the mavericks when it comes to steel rated. If you have any other gunsmiths or shops nearby it's the accu choke that fits Mossberg, or google tells me that any winchester or browning invector style should fit as well as a replacement.
 
I think the tube was not installed tight into the barrel allowing the thin lip to be exposed and the shot column got it. Don't let anyone try and 'fix' that tube. It is ruined. Install a new tube and inspect the fit when installed.

A slight burr where the choke tube meets the barrel should not be buffed out, the thread and fit should be re cut slightly deeper with a reamer and tap. You need some one who installs choke tubes to fix this.

Improved cylinder choke works very well with steel shot. I would recommend it over a modified tube.

I agree with you 100%. I wonder if it was the wrong tube and although the right pitch thread was too short so it would not show as being loose

It was the factory installed choke. As usual when I bought it I stripped it right down cleaned and oiled. Choke installed normal. Didnt notice a gap, not to say I missed a slight gap. Either way I'll need a new tube to check the fit. I wouldn't even be opposed to finding a longer barrel either

My educated guess would be that the choke was slightly damaged when it went in with a dent or nick protruding slightly into the barrel. During firing the wad or shot has caught on this imperfection and made it worse. Difficult to tell from just a photo though.

That's what I was also thinking moon...perhaps it got dropped on its edge...picked up and reinstalled into the barrel....perhaps a small dent inward of a few thou ...certainly might have made a big diff when the shot charge was moving forward

But that would have had to happen the first round after installation which maybe the case here but it doesn't sound it
