Hi,

I have an older (early '70's I'm guessing) 12ga, 3" chamber Miroku o/u, 30" barrels with fixed mod/full chokes. It's near identical to my fathers Miroku Charles Daly version. I bought the gun as a back-up and parts gun for my dad's Charles Daly even though my Miroku is in way better condition. I'm considering installing Briley chokes however the cost (if my math is correct) will be around $1200+- when you consider installation, 5 chokes, exchange rate, shipping, taxes etc. I've only used the gun for the odd round of trap and 3-5 duck hunts (with Tungsten Matrix). I want to use the gun for skeet, doves, waterfowling and need steel shot and open choke options. Question - Would I be better off buying a used Citori with chokes? Will the Briley chokes decrease the value of the gun? It's a nice gun in very good condition and I plan on keeping it.

Let me know what your thoughts are!

Thanks,
RB

Yeah, I'd buy another gun for your hunting purposes. You'll never get back the 1200 you put in the Miroku, which is a nice trap gun in itself.

The chokes won't decrease the value of the gun, but they won't increase it anywhere near as much as you'll pay to have the work done.

You can get a decent semi for the price you've quoted for the work, so I'd get another gun personally.

Maybe just get them opened up to what you use the most. I very rarely use anything but imp/mod in my doubles so maybe thus would work for you.

As this gun is, your fixed chokes are fine for trap. For the hunting you describe, Improved Cylinder and Modified would be about perfect, and this combination would also be great for 16 yard trap and doubles unless you ride them out to the grass. This should cost $150-200 if done by a a competent gunsmith. Don't get Joe the plumber to open 'er up with his pipe reamers, you want it to shoot to point of aim with both barrels. You state this is your back up trap gun, it doesn't make sense to spend the value of the gun or more on this gun, you will only marginally increase the value.
