Chopped up my Stag today!

Hoddie: You were wise not to mess with another gas block. Tolerances being what they are could wind up being a hit and miss with the gas seal. Once you have a good gas seal between the FSB and the bbl, there's no sense messing with it. Besides, your gas block is out of sight anyways so WGAShzt?

Great venture!

Ok.

So, for anyone who wants this done to their rifle, and really cringes when you bring a grinder or other cutting tool near...get ahold of me.

I offered in another thread to do dis-assembly/change-over for free if the shipping is covered.

I even have a chopped down (pinned) front sight block similar to hoddie's. available if someone wants it.

If anyone wants help, let me know, pleased to assist.

Oh, and Hoddie, looks like a DAMN Sweet rifle to play with!

You cant aways switch front sight blocks -- since they are pinned on the rifle -- the holse do not always match up
Your usually (but not always) good if its the same manufacturer and model - as I have swapped Colt M4A1 front sight blocks.

True that.

I tried putting the chopped block onto another rifle at one point, and it didn't match up quite right. Probably fit another Colt though, and the price would be right if it did fit.

Ok I am getting ready to start chopping. I will take some pics as well. Going with Hoddie's idea.

question, how do I get that stainless gas rod thing out so I dont #### it up?

This question is for something different. Is Samson rail same as Troy? Or are there features the distinguish one from the other?

Here is a closer picture of the front sight base. I had to taper in the sides more in order to clear the inside of the upper rail. Just use a black marker to indicate what has to come off. This profile fit perfectly with space on either side, so there is nothing touching the rail. Thus a real free floated barrel. The other pic is the shot form the underside. The fsb is hidden well back from the end of the rail. I just cold blued it to prevent rust forming.
Hope this helps,
Hoddie.

I'm really liking the looks of this. A nice light 16" carbine, that doesn't have tons of barrel sticking out. If I keep my Stag, I think it's gonna get this treatment...

Good job hoddie.

I just got a bottle from Wholesale sports, but I have seen it at Canadian Tire. It's easy to use. Use the steel wool to rough up area, wipe area with solvent, apply cold blue with sponge and then wash off with cold water. The more you do this, the darker the blueing. It may not be the prettiest, but it works.

My Stag chop/ free float install is finally done. I will post pics tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks Hoddie for all of your help. And thanks anyone else who heloed me as well.
