Christmas Sale GNG Carcano Moschetto

Excuse the cropped photo (took a pic off my phone of a few I picked up recently) but mine was visually in reasonable shape. I'd guess "fair" to "good". My issue is it shoots about 4' high and 12" right at 100 yards, off of sandbags, with PPU ammo (139gr but with 0.264 dia projectiles if I recall correctly).

Bought Lee dies and it only comes with the 0.264" expander.

I just looked at their website and the "Bannerman Mosin" was the one I bought in 2005 from P&S Militaria for $200. I sold it for much less than they're asking ($2995!), but more than I paid for it - no regrets

20 years ago I bet they couldn't give that Bannerman Mosin away.

Just use a generic mouth flaring tool to bell open the tip of the case.

Your front sight is windage adjustable on your carbine. Also, these have a 200m zero. And you need to bury the post in the base of the rear sight notch, and use a 6 o clock hold. They are designed that way.

Here's a bit of background on it. I guess I'm becoming notorious with the OP for hijacking his threads, but he had a part in the thread.

I bought it because it was said to be "dangerous" by the armchair experts and that didn't make sense to me - and it was inexpensive. The identical reasons why I have bought about 10 "Eaton Cooey Carcanos" over the years for an average of about $100 and proved them to be very strong, not dangerous at all. The OP knows all about that too. Sold a few sets of the double trigger assemblies on eBay for US$250 as well...

Back to the thread - I caved and ordered one... I am weak.

I bought my Carcano back when they were despised and priced accordingly. A 91/41 by Armaguerra Cremona. Respectable condition with a fine bore. Very pleasant to shoot.

Just got a Cooey-Carcano. Rather sorry condition. But it is going to become a 7.62x39. Did one for a chap a while back, thought it was time to do one for myself. Straightforward conversion, good plinker. It would be fun to drop a 7.62x39 barreled action into a service rifle stock... No more .264 - .268 issues...

Thanks Andy, just ordered one. That will save me some time for sure.

A guy like you with a lathe and the knowledge of how to use it, could size down a 270 Win expander too. That's a lot of neck work on the brass (the die might size it down to 0.260" or so depending on the brass) and ideally the die would be opened up too. Annealing the brass every 3-4 shots will help.

yes! Do it and sell them.

I am sorry for bashing that little Carcano but keep in mind that this was about the condition description. I would probably pay a little more and buy from a retailer I know they would tell me exactly what I am getting, like Marstar or SFRC. Never had an issue with those 2. I am not afraid doing some restoration work but that picture from the stock is a little too much of "saw battle use" for my taste.

I'd still have to buy a .270 expander to machine, so easier to just buy one. I though about just machining one from stock, but then I'd need to go buy more drill rod to make the recapping pin. The lee one is cheap. So no harm, no foul.

Opening up lee dies is not an easy task. They are VERY hard. It need to buy a .266 carbide or cobalt reamer. Likely not worth the effort. It's not hard to anneal brass.

Next time I'm loading some ammo, I'll size a case with no expander and report back on what is sizes to. I suspect it's likely around .262.

Marstar or sfrc aren't going to hand select a carcano for you unless you pay them to hand select. I know marstar offers hand selects. Not sure if sfrc does.

Agree. 0.267" should give you about the right amount of neck tension for the bullets you intend to use.

I might head down to TigerArms in Port Coquitlam and check out what they have available. ($369, but I save on shipping). This thread is sorely tempting me!

When they are gone, they will go up in price, just like every other import has. I remember people calling $125 m48 and m44 mosins a waste of money, junky, etc. Not long ago... Maybe 15 or 20 years. At that time I was buying 91/30s under $100.

I remember french berthier a under $250, mas 36's for Around 275. All within the last 20 years.

Things change. As always. Unless the turd bans more rifles, which he would do in a heartbeat if he thought 5 more soccer moms would vote lieberal.
