Chuck Hawks on Compact Rifles (and the grain of salt™)

what pisses me off is that he presents everything as fact and makes himself out to be some sort of gun guru that has extensively tested all these things hes reviewing. im starting to think hes never even laid hands on half the stuff hes reviewed.

its a shame because a lot of people take him at his word on everything. the fact that hes often in the top 5-6 google search results for firearms-related queries and is posting BS information is disturbing.

There would be one less if you weren't so infatuated with him......:p

Come on, tell us about the fan mail.....

what, like this?

I don't fancy Chuck, even is he is "ghey", but at least he is not as opiniated ad the late Jeff cooper...

As a Jeff Cooper enthusiast I would like to point out that the Colonel's "opinions" were based on a life time of small arms experimentation, observation, training, and teaching long before the internet wizards appeared. His facilities at Big Bear and Gun Site exposed him to more firearm related knowledge than most of us could hope to gain in a life time. When Cooper expressed an opinion, he usually ended an opinion based statement with," but everyone has their own ideas." If you find yourself in disagreement with a statement Cooper put forward as fact rather than opinion, you should probably reconsider your position.

Interestingly enough, the material Cooper wrote on hunting buffalo in Africa came closer to my experience than anything else I read - and I read quite a bit. I for one will consider his writings and videos as a source of inspiration and knowledge for many years to come. Much of what Cooper has written written is timeless.

Everyone has his favoite expert, or an expert he loves to hate. Cooper was perhpas my favorite, but I don't care for Boddington - yet I'll conceede he's "been there and done that". I liked Warren Page, Col. Townsend Whelen, Elmer Keith, and Jack O'Conner who were among my favorites during my younger years.

I get a kick out of that biker looking Jeff Quinn on Gun Blast, and I find his writing entertaining. I seldom read Chuck Hawks, although it is handy to have a site where one can go for reliable information. You only have to be at odds with that information once though to put all of it into question.

I own a short barrelled powerful rifle. I shoot this rifle without discomfort from excessive recoil or muzzle blast despite devouring up to 95 grs of powder per round. When I do my part it will shoot MOA from the bench or prone, but more to the point it will shoot as well as I can hold in the field.

OMG!!!
Boomer, how can you even MENTION Chuck Hawkes in the same post as
great shooters and writers as Page Whelen, O'Connor, or Cooper??!!:D:D:D
As far the Col.(?) Cooper goes, I never agree with everything he beleived in (never could get the handle on a scout style rifle) but his ideals of the perfect combat handgun, and IPSC in general are bang on as far as I am concerned....

Jeff Quinn is OK until you come to the realization that he says almost the exact same things about every rifle... not to mention that after reading dozens of his 'reviews' ive noticed that hes never posted anything but glowing praise about the rifles he reviews.
surely after reviewing so many rifles you come across some issues, faults, poor performance, etc... but no: every rifle that passes through Jeff's hands is a 10/10.

i do like the fact that he takes close-ups of key parts of guns though, its nice to be able to go to his site when a new rifle is released and see closeups of the action out of the stock, bolt, etc that you dont normally see until it arrives at your local gun store.

You don't like Chuck Hawks, you don't believe that barrel length has any effect on felt recoil.

My opinion on Hawkes is mixed but anyone that says short barrelled CF rifles don't recoil more than those with longer barrels or 1/2 a pound doesnt make a difference all else equal is just plain wrong. That doesn't mean you can't handle it, but chuck isn't wrong on that one.

I can't believe that people actually pay money to read Chuck Hawks opinions.

Chuck Hawks is so great, some of his articles are free.

Yessir, Chuck Hawks and Chuck Norris.........Wow. Don't it make you want to change your name to Chuck? Well, manbearpig?:D;)
