Chuck Hawks on Compact Rifles (and the grain of salt™)

I don't read Chuck Hawks stuff very often. I usually go to GunBlast first. The GunBlast reviews have definitely convinced me on certain purchases in the past.

As a Jeff Cooper enthusiast I would like to point out that the Colonel's "opinions" were based on a life time of small arms experimentation, observation, training, and teaching long before the internet wizards appeared. His facilities at Big Bear and Gun Site exposed him to more firearm related knowledge than most of us could hope to gain in a life time. When Cooper expressed an opinion, he usually ended an opinion based statement with," but everyone has their own ideas." If you find yourself in disagreement with a statement Cooper put forward as fact rather than opinion, you should probably reconsider your position.

Interestingly enough, the material Cooper wrote on hunting buffalo in Africa came closer to my experience than anything else I read - and I read quite a bit. I for one will consider his writings and videos as a source of inspiration and knowledge for many years to come. Much of what Cooper has written written is timeless.

Everyone has his favoite expert, or an expert he loves to hate. Cooper was perhpas my favorite, but I don't care for Boddington - yet I'll conceede he's "been there and done that". I liked Warren Page, Col. Townsend Whelen, Elmer Keith, and Jack O'Conner who were among my favorites during my younger years.

I get a kick out of that biker looking Jeff Quinn on Gun Blast, and I find his writing entertaining. I seldom read Chuck Hawks, although it is handy to have a site where one can go for reliable information. You only have to be at odds with that information once though to put all of it into question.

I own a short barrelled powerful rifle. I shoot this rifle without discomfort from excessive recoil or muzzle blast despite devouring up to 95 grs of powder per round. When I do my part it will shoot MOA from the bench or prone, but more to the point it will shoot as well as I can hold in the field.

+1 for Jeff Quinn

As for Chuck Hawks, he does carrys tons of information on his site. Its a good starter point for many, but like anything should be taken with a grain of salt. I happen to disagree with a few of his statments, not saying he's wrong or I'm right. Just that I disagree. Like any information it is the resposiblity of the reader to filter out the baloney and tom foolery that may be contained in it.

Long live Elmer Keith!!
