Hi All,
I am new to shooting and would like to get a nice classic bolt action 22lr with w wooden stock that's a high quality and preferably used( to keep the costs down).
I mainly intend on target shooting for fun.
What would you recommend? Are there any hidden gems?

Anything that says "Anschutz" on it will be a gem. Personally we've had great luck with the Anschutz 64. Very nice rifle and considerably cheaper than the 54 action.

I can't think of anything that fits the bill of both "classic" and keeping the costs down, unless you want a single shot.

Have a look at Intersurplus though, they've got a good selection of older used stuff.

Thanks everyone!
I saw an Anschutz 1551/42 for sale for under $500, but I could not find much inf on it. What do you think of this model?

Thank you all for awesome recommendation. I saw Brno 2 for under $500, so maybe that's an option, although a bit pricy.

500$ is pretty much the min price of most used high quality European guns these day.

Unless you want like a Lakefield MK II that can be found under 300.

Another option I was thinking of was to buy a new rifle like savage, and build a wooden full length stock for it. I do a bit of woodworking and really like the full stock look.

Buy once, cry once. You won’t go wrong with an Anschutz. Brnos are nice and the model 4s that I owned were very accurate. Lots of CZ rifles used in CRPS and Outlaw rimfire competitions! They’re a nice rifle. Try handling or better yet, shooting the different guns. Best of luck

Many of the vintage US made bolt action .22s from the '50s and '60s would qualify. Rifles like the Winchester 69. Remington 51X series. Even Mossbergs, Savages and Marlins. Steel and walnut.
The Brno 1 or 2 are excellent. I have a Model 2 that is an outstanding shooter. As mentioned, so are the Anschutz rifles.
There are lots of rifles out there worth a second look. Watch the EE, used racks in gunshops, gunshows, etc.

You mentionned restocking a rifle as a project... I rebarreled a Brno Model 1 and restocked it with a Mannlicher style stock. Really sweet rifle; let a friend talk me out of it...

Pay more and get a full wood CZ.

Like LS said, buy once cry once. It took me 19 plus years before buying an Anschutz and having alot of plinkers over the years. It's nice having a 1/2" gun and cost me 600$.

But check out https://intersurplus.com/collections/22-lr

Got a selection of nice European 22s

I struggle along with a bunch of CZ 455's and a growing number of 457's, all wood stock, and all as they come from the factory. Good quality for a fair price. Accurate out of the box. Bad news for gophers!

Those older Mossberg are getting harder to find parts for. Took me months to find a spring. I grabbed the last in stock from Numrich and other US places won't ship to Canada. And places like WGP won't waste time their time for small spring.

So basically gotta buy parts guns.
