Cleaning your handguns

Well, the dirt on my car or the oil inside my engine have little ability to effect my health.
I spend a good deal of time dry-firing my guns at home and if they're spewing trace amounts of powder in the air every time I rack the slide.. Also they sit sometimes a month, 2 months, 3 before their next use.
I find it a drag, but still clean em often

So you've never inhaled any exhaust whatsoever? Hmm interesting.

Also I think anything left on the gun would have little to no effect. Like you said, "trace" amounts.

I clean my Glocks every 2-3000 rounds, I guess. I might go 5000 sometimes. Depends what I feel like. They run fine. If I had to depend on them for my life I'd probably clean and inspect them all the time, maybe every 1000 rounds or so. Otherwise, who cares? Unless your gun sucks, it's going to run for a couple thousand rounds between cleanings without a stoppage or anything.

I throw a bit of oil in maybe every 500 rounds or so. Depends, if I'm busy I might go 1000 rounds. They're glocks.

If you clean because you enjoy cleaning, clean away. But a gun should not need to be babied to work properly.

This is a discussion about the philosophy of firearms ownership.
I am reading perfectly logical comments from guys who don't clean after every shoot and my gut says "you filthy, uncaring bastards". I enjoy reloading and maintaining as much as shooting and I can't imagine putting a dirty gun in the safe. I also realize that I have OCD tendencies and some of the other kids don't want to play with me because I am odd.
I need to go wash my hands and check turn the deadbolt on the front door 7 times...

I've cleaned and lubricated my P226R every single day since I got it from the good folks at SFRC... then again, I don't have my ATT for it yet so its a safe queen, its my first firearm in quite a few years, I've owned it for less than one week, and I haven't even shot it yet... don't you judge me!:mad:

But yeah, I figure I'll clean it and grease it up all ###y after every range day... I take rather good care of my toys.

Some day, remind me to tell you about my smoker, kamado, gas grill, hibachi, and charcoal kettle and how clean they are despite constant use!

It depends a lot on what type of ammo is used.

Shooting bare lead means you must clean your barrel often.
Jacketed bullets, not so much.

I clean mine thoroughly every 1-2 range sessions so, 200-500 rounds. And, if they sit in the safe for a long time in between range sessions I will lightly re-oil. I use high end synthetic gun grease on all friction surfaces too so it doesnt evaporate over time.

Usually within a few days of last use. I don't always have time to get on them immediately but is gives me something to do when my wife & daughters are watching Vampires, KKKardashians or Jersey Whores.

I have a TV in the cave so I often throw on a Hockey or Football game and then start cleaning.

I think the difference is IMHO is that I drive my car everyday - I don't shoot my gun everyday. I clean after every use so that when I take the gun out of storage after a week, month, year - I don't say WTF ?!

insert train wreck -> TWK

Well guess what - after following this thread and feeling quite self-righteous concerning routine maintenance I pulled the 629 out of the safe the other day and and and WTF !!!

'nother train wreck -> TWK

seems the OCD wasn't working the last time I used it and it was in bad shape. I'm thinking that the last time I used it was 2-3 months ago and because I shoot lead thru this one it was pretty much welded in there.

That'll learn me...

Even if I put 30 rounds through my cz85 I take her down and clean it, G96, bore patches and a tooth brush, takes 10 minutes to get all the fouling off the gun. saves you from those epic overhauls. Use some bore solvent every now and then if you want to get serious. Compressed air speeds things up. seriously strictly G96, oil freezes

There's a big difference between strip clean every bit of dirt out of the action and run a swab down the bore and wipe off the outside with an oily cloth. I always make sure the bore is clean and wipe off the outside with oil if I only shoot one round. Learned that one the hard way a long time ago - applies to any type of gun. Strip clean...well that depends on how dirty it gets as some ammo is dirtier than others. I will admit to just sliding off the top end on pistols and spraying a little WD-40 on and wipe off with paper towel and then spray with a bit of G96 and doing the same with revolvers without doing a strip clean for ages. My guns spend more safe time than shooting time. Of course if you are shooting corrosive, you will learn that you must strip clean and oil as soon as you get home or else you are in for a surprise...a nasty surprise! Oh, and the same thing applies to blackpowder.

I try to clean the metal surfaces of my Glock every week. Wipe off all oil, inspect metal for rust, cracks, etc. with magnifying glass & check function of mag release. Re-oil metal, and back into storage. Every month, clean the barrel and bore, vigorous cleaning of all metal surfaces with a brush & lube everything.

EDIT: And a detail cleaning and inspection after range visits for excessive wear, etc.
