in short- flitz and elbow grease- i should imagine you're talking about the front of the cylinder, by the forcing cone- those lead-away cloths work as well- flitz is like a toothpaste, the cloths are wipe and polish- sometimes for really bad i'll use both

To get it shiny and new you need:

  • Dremel Tool
  • Felt polishing wheel
  • "Cow Brand" baking soda
  • water
If you don't have a Dremel tool, it will take considerably more elbow grease to accomplish.

Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with a bit a water to form a paste. Apply to face of cylinder and buff with felt wheel.

CAUTION: Be careful when polishing with a Dremel. Excessive polishing will give you a polished SS finish which will resemble nickle plating or chrome. If you over polish a spot on your gun, you will then have to polish the whole thing to avoid having a "chromed" patch on the gun.

I generally just buff the face of the cylinder and the flutes. Takes every last speck of carbon off.

Or your can use toxic and expensive chemicals to do the same job!

thanks guys. i guess i should have been a little more clear. this is a brand new gun so i dont need to be doing the dremel just yet. first trip to the range on the weekend (sat) put through 50 american eagle 38 specials (158 grain) and 50 lellier&bellot 357 mag rounds (158grs) did not clean until sunday... had some buddys over sat night so the poor thing didnt get cleaned until sunday (when the wife kicked me out of bed....honey due list) its a seven shot, round cylinder (no flutes) the outer side of the cylinder has some carbon on, which will not come off using hoppes. this is my first stainless... so was a little worried about the finish.

just about everywhere , but wal-mart or cdn tire carry it- it;s in with the chrome polishes and silvo/brasso

O.P.- I was serious about using poly pencil eraser, it really does work great. It doesn't remove any materiel, just wipe with a rag after using then you have a nice polished finish. Try it you will be amazed.
