Close range polar bear rifle

PS: How come no one mentioned the .375 or .416 Ruger – I sold a .416 to a chopper pilot last year – he thought it was more than enough wampum for the white bear. Personally, I would go with my S/S .375 Ruger with 1.5-4x Leupold 30mm with 260 grain accubonds.
However, in the middle of the night, the reality is I would probably scream like a school girl, sh*t myself and then be eaten - which would better than dying of cancer though.

Ahh the venerable 303 British... the cartridge that has killed more animals and wounded more animals around the world than any other...

Yep I moved on from that 25 years ago... ;)

Yup...right up there with those piece of s**t 30-06's, .308's, 7.62x54R's..... :p

Wounding is a product of what's behind the gun and less of what is coming out of the front.

45/70 with the XS scout rail
Shotgun would be my first choice.

That rifle in the pic is a model 1894 in 44mag...

;)

Only polar I've heard of being gunned down in an emergency was with a 12ga from under 3ft. First hand account. Grounded Bell 212 or 204 I think it was with about half a dozen people sleeping in it. Bear ripped the door off in 2 swipes and everyone piled out the other door and climbed the machine. One ballsy bastard jumped down and popped open the luggage compartment next to the bear's ass and got the gun(bear had his front end in the machine).

2 brother's from St. Anthony had to kill a polar bear a few years ago. They were seal hunting. When one brother turned around and a polar bear had his brother on the ground and was just about to bite down on his torso when he shot the polar bear in the ear....... with a 22 magnum!. He said the hardest part was getting his brother out from underneath the dead bear.

Norway polar bear attack kills one Briton, injures four

CNN) -- A 17-year-old British boy is dead and four others are severely injured after a polar bear attacked their tents as they took part in a school trip to the Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, officials said Friday.

The five were among a group of 13 from a British school who were at the Von Postbreen glacier, a statement on the Svalbard governor's website said.

Those injured are 16, 17, 27 and 29 years old, the statement said. They are being flown to a hospital in the northern Norwegian city of Tromso, after initial treatment in Longyearbyen, the largest settlement in Svalbard, situated about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the glacier.

Police are investigating the attack, which occurred early Friday. The eight members of the party who were unharmed are also being cared for, the Svalbard governor's website said.

The polar bear has been killed, the statement added.

The United Kingdom's Foreign Office confirmed that a British national had been killed and said relatives of those involved had been informed.

"A consular team headed by the ambassador and the vice consul are on their way to the scene," a spokesman said.

A notice posted on the website earlier this year warned of polar bear sightings near Longyearbyen. Seeking out or disturbing polar bears is banned under local laws.

Jim McNeil, a polar explorer, told ITV-News reporters in London that explorers often set trip-wires around a camp that will create a disturbance when triggered, alerting everyone to the presence of a bear.

McNeil said it is possible that, in this instance, the trip-wire malfunctioned, or that the camp was simply been targeted by an enraged bear.

"Occasionally, very, very occasionally, you get a bear that is, for whatever reason, in a stinky bad mood and they are very difficult to deal with," he said. "In Svalbard, for example, the locals will shoot three bears on average, a year, because of encounters."

McNeil said people should always develop a watch system so that someone is always awake to alert the camp to bears. He added, ultimately, explorers have to rely on good training.

"Before you go out and you take on Mother Nature -- Polar Bears are top of the food chain ... and you must wholly respect that and you must be knowledgeable about what you're taking on," he said.

Maybe someone can enlighten me a bit.

My 30-06 with factory win ammo (180 grain bullet) has higher velocity resulting in potent energy muzzle than the 45-70 ammo. Now if I buy the ammo with a 220 gr bullet, it is even higher than the 45-70.

The 45-70 is better....how? Other than my 30-06 holds five in the magazine as opposed to Marlins 4 or guidegun 6, how does the 45-70 rank higher? {lease enlighten.

I agree with the conservation officers, 30-06 all the way.

Although I have used the forearm trick, I dont' btoher anymore.

These days I just wait until the bear is charging straight at me, with jaws wide. Then just before he pounces, I ram my whole arm down his throat, grab hold of whatever I can and then give a real hard jerk. This will pop the bear inside out, and he will still be charging, but now he will be charging int he opposite direction!

Yep that would work for me too. Then all other bears would die laughing at this inside out bear and Parks Canada would want to lay the blame on you.

A while back I was sent an email with a few photos of a polar bear chasing a whitey
around a pick up truck. I was just curious as to how he got himself out of that pickle?
The chap circling around the truck managed to stay almost direct opposite the fur ball,
but for the life of me couldn't see how he managed to open a door or whether the one with the camera shot the blasted polar bear?
Or did the chap drop and roll?
Another story about a gal here locally was laying by her inground pool suntanning and
fell asleep. She woke up to something licking her. A black bear took the notion to start
licking the sun tan lotion off her back. She rolled into the pool to get away.
This is a true story, I kid you not. :)

Impact energy of the bigger bullet at point-blank range will out-do the .30-06 simply because the .30-06 will be firing a good 800 fps or so faster. The 30-cal has great penetration.. which is not something you want up close and in a hurry; the bullet, even a heavy SP, will act kind of like an FMJ; it might not expand quickly enough and cause enough damage, particularly if you only catch a glancing blow.

.45/70 and shotty slugs are well-on twice the weight of the .30 cal bullets; the shock of the heavy big-bore round will rupture organs and burst blood vessels in a watermelon-sized area where the bullet hits, not to mention shattering even the biggest bones with those monster 400-grain slugs. A glancing hit with one through a bear's arm will cause the bear to have to stop and look around for the missing limb.

In the end though, both will work fine. I'd rate the .30-06 as being less capable as an emergency 'It-is-in-my-freaking-tent' defence weapon, but as the Inuit hunters remark (and they'd sure as hell know,) it is perfectly capable for the job of putting nanook in his place, and I wouldn't lose sleep if I had that instead of the 45/70.

Hilarious.:p

Bullets going too fast to expand!:D

Alright then; thinking on that, I was indeed talking out of my arse. No idea what I was thinking about. Something about faster bullets not doing as much damage or something. Maybe I was thinking entirely about FMJs?

I blame the scotch; this Bruichladdich is awful good and I wasn't able to stop at one dram. :D
