My partner and I are moving from Manitoba, to Cochrane, Alberta, at the end of the month. We are retired, and one of the things I would like to spend more time doing, is shooting. My main interest is muzzle loading, but also shoot BPCR, and smokeless from time to time. Is there a Muzzle Loading/ Black Powder club in the area? Is there a shooting range nearby? Any advice is gratefully accepted.

You could check out the APRA for shooting clubs and ranges. About 40min drive from Cochrane. Milo might be another option. Unsure on muzzle loading and black powder clubs. Welcome to AB and enjoy the mountains.
 
there may be local ranges around that Im not aware of ( there is an approved Cowboy range west of Granum but I don't know if it is public assessable). Normally in that area I would suggest a couple boxes of Timmies on your car seat and a trip around the countryside to meet some of the local ranchers with large holdings and a few somewhat remote coulees to shoot into ( almost endless distances for your BPCR) but the BP /sparks thing might sour them a bit. The folks in the area you are moving too are very "prairie fire" wary in the spring and from first of August to first snowfall.

The CDTSA range at Milo might be the best bet for you in that area (prob.an hours drive).

They are a bit disorganized and the site isn't always updated but we're working on it.

The Fort Whoop up Black Powder club and Pincher Creek Ramrodders are on Facebook. As is a BC Rendezvous group. Calgary unfortunately doesn't really have a black powder club but there is a range complex in the foothills not far from Cochrane.

Lethbridge has a shoot every month in the summer and a couple other events. There are shoots in Red Deer, Pincher Creek, Sherwood park, Golden, Fort McMurray and maybe a few more. Kamloops has Heffley Creek which is 10 days and ends labour day but is a hefty drive.

The drive from Cochrane to Milo would be closer to a 2hr drive.

OP you may want to look at the Kananaskis range near Dead Man's Flats. Would be much closer to you than Milo.
 
I’ll pm you the contact info for the Alberta Blackpowder shooting association later today, and contact info for the blackpowder club in Lethbridge. I was in the same boat and ran into some members earlier this year.
 
Not black powder but buffalo target shooting is 40min drive south west of you, outdoors in a gravel pit. As well hunter valley road is 40min north of you which has lots of nice places to shoot on hwy 40. If your interested in black powder and want to give buffalo a try on a weekday pm me i have guest passes, i really dont like weekends too busy for my taste
 
You could always go shoot on the Waiparous PLUZ (crown land) IF they are non restricted black powder firearms. Access to the land is free and the roads are maintained. Probably only 30min from Cochrane.

Lots of reasons. Mostly it's a lifestyle change. We're looking to be close to the mountains, skiing hiking and all sorts of other outdoor activities. We believe it will be easier to be active all year round here, then Manitoba. Also it's half an hour to the airport, and 40 minutes to the mountains. Not to mention scenic and such a lovely community.
 
Should have dropped down to the Fort Whoop Up rendezvous in Lethbridge this weekend. It was a blast pardon the pun.
