Colt 1849 pocket... Info and value?

I'll be the first to stick my neck out and guess a value. Making some assumptions on bore and lock -up and viewing that there appears to be no silver left on the frame, it would appear that the piece had some considerable use. The 5" barrel is more desireable than 4 but less than 6 and presuming all else is equal--without the box and accessories it would be only about 1100- in my market. Add the box and if the included bits are original the value should jump to 1800- or so. If the finish were better, say 80-90% bluing and similar silver then you would be in the 3000- range. That's my never to be so humble opinion. Nice piece to own. Cheers
 
Two cased Colt Model 1849s.
Look at the blue on the first one....Sold at RIA auction Dec 3 2010---$9,775. (6 inch barrel.) Mauufactued in 1853.

Sold at Live Auction World Dec 4th 2010 $6,000 plus $1,170 fees and taxes. (4 inch barrel) Manufactured in 1858.

There is a cased '49 on the Equipment Exchage (Black Powder and Antiques) that could provide a reference point to help determine a value.
 
It is definitely an antique. As to value, it is difficult to ascertain unless examined. Finish, matching numbers, etc are critical in establishing value. Generally they run between $600 - $1500 in this country.
 
Nice looking gun --- congratulations. It is an antique and you do not need a license to possess. You are supposed to store them as if they were a modern gun. Re price; I am guessing a lot closer to the 1000 range. I think you said it was cased and if the case is original, it is probably worth a fair bit more. Prices vary with condition as well as presence or absence of restoration work. Highest prices are guns that approach factory new and no restoration.
Looks like a fun gun to shoot; I would suggest checking out your local fish and game club for a black powder section and have them go over shooting and maintenance with you. Lyman's black powder manual is also a very useful book if you can find a copy

Very lucky fellow is what I'd call you; although sorry about the death that preceded it's arrival.
You shoud be looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 - 5 K$.
No expert though, others are sure to chime in soon.
