It's very straightforward though the ability to detail strip a 1911 would be an asset. If you do know how to do this, when you remove the mainspring housing, just remove the spring and little piece on the side of the mainspring housing. It should just fall off, it's not really attached in any way.
If this doesn't make sense to you, there are a few YouTube vids but basically you can keep the pistol assembled but use a punch to push out the pin at the rear bottom of the grip. Once you do this, slide down the mainspring housing (which is the backstrap of the grip) then remove the little spring and piece that are on the left side of the MSH if I recall correctly. Really simple so far but the slightly trickier part is reinstalling. When you push the MSH back into the grip, you want to make sure that the hammer strut is centered so that it fits into the centre top of the MSH (where the mainspring is) and also make sure that the grip safety is pressed down so it does not swing back freely.
