Never owned a ar, my local gun store has a colt ar15 sportsman for sale for 1400$ one clip, and some old sight with a dead battery it is used, and 15 years old.. Hes also got some stags , imperial defense, and rock rivers for sale but he said he'd go with the used colt over any of the new ones, the stags and rock rivers were so light and felt like a toy seems cheaply made, but the colt was almost 2x as heavy as the others, i think it had a 20'' barrel but the guy said he take the colt over any of the new stuff anyday, he kept going on about the colt were the original makers of the ar and how awesome they are, is he pulling my leg and trying to just sell it and get rid of his used one? Or is it actually a good gun and is 1400$ an ok price for 15 year old gun? Let me know what you fellows think i would really appreciate the feedback let me know!!! If its a good buy!
Thanks everyone

It was Armalite.. a div. of the Fiarchild engine/aircraft Co.
That developed the gun... AFAIK..

As for Colt... Not impressed. 'Seen more of them fail than any other make.

Is it an HBAR, Sporter II, or SP2?

If it's in really good shape with a nice clean barrel and lots of finish left, get the Colt. Maybe pick up some springs and tune up parts. A 20'' Colt makes an ideal KISS gun or bench shooter. But if you're looking to trick it out with all the latest gadgets, go with a flat top, carbine barrel from Stag or Armalite, more options.

Either way don't be too swayed by the soldier of fortune counter guy. Decide what you want out of this.

He really wants to sell that gun, doesn't he? Even a Colt will shoot like crap with a shot out barrel. Be careful of wolves in sheep's clothing.

I agree with hardballer in that it really depends what type of AR you are looking for: target, competition, tacticool...I would be weary of the Colt unless you are allowed to fieldstrip it and have a look. Does the shop offer any warranty on its used guns? Colt is not the end all be all. I would take a look at the Stag myself...IMHO

My #### will fall off? Sorry i dont understand:d is it cause it weighs alot more than the new ar's? It is a colt sporter thats all i know! 15 years old, the thing is i want an ar for some accurate shooting, something simple and hopefully low maintenance the only knowledge i have of guns is simple teardown and cleaning nothing more, the new ones i held several times seem to turn me away, they a soooo lightweight and fell like toys made of all plastic the colt has a good weight and feel to it, maybe im blinded by this old piece of junk?, or maybe it is the gun store owner trying to convince me that this colt is a better piece compared to the new stags and mp 15's? I am very interested in this one...do alot of these older colt with 20'' barrels come up for sale in original condition? All i see is this modified new $hit with all these rediculous add on's what do u guys think?
Let me know
thanks

Don't worry - I've never understood the use of the phrase either.
As for the AR, you can do better. Many board vendors will sell you a new in box AR for the $1400 range.
Welcome to the forum!

1400$ is normal for a used colt @ a gun shop. You can score one for 1200-1300 in the EE if you're lucky. (for hbar/sport2/gov't model/hbar II competition)
1400$ is good if its in really good shape/all original, etc etc.. Either way, you won't go wrong.

If it's an SP1 -- (sporter) 1000-1300 depending on the shape/serial number/parts.

Good luck dude!

Although the rifle was developed by the original Armalite I think Colt was the original manufacturer. Most of the older Colts were really well made and as long as it hasn't been abused it should be in good condition. I like the A2 version, although the HBAR version is a little heavy--I've got one myself and I'd prefer a Govt profile, I think. If you're not adding a scope the fixed sights will work fine. If you want to scope a flat top model like the Stag might be better.

I bought a used colt H-bar for $ 1500. As far as i was concerned it far outclassed the rest. As for accuracy, i'd put it against any of the others. and I still got my ####.....

If your set on this one then ask him you would like the head-space and bore erosion checked before you buy it, But if you want a new rifle closest to a Colt go with the Stag.

I have a Colt Hbar Sporter 20" and a Norinco 5.56 M4, IMO, both are good, but if I have to pick one, then my 16 years old Colt AR still out perform the 8 month old Norinco in finish, build, feel, looks, and accuracy. Having said I will pick the Colt, it doesn't mean Norinco or other ARs are bad, I just perfer a heavier gun my self, others seem to be a bit too light, feels like a kid toy.

Something nobody's mentioned:

The original Colts including the Sporter have a 2 screw front pin...it's not compatible with the milspec small pins on virtually every other AR rifle. You can use adapter offset pins etc but it's not quite as good as being able to readily interchange any upper with virtually every lower.

Also, for a while there Colt was selling their bolt carriers with the bottom milled off...not sure how long that worked without problems or wobbling.

But everything being equal, I've always loved Colts and I like the gray finish on them. Lots of them were either never fired much or at all. I wouldn't assume it's shot out.
The Colt name has cachet the other pretenders will only dream about...(runs for cover...:p )
