Colt SOPMOD M4A1 thread

I thought the m4 and m4s is also classified as the m68 cco no?

My bad, you're correct about M68, I just always put the CompM2 to that name.

Well, in Fy2017 Giessele only had a total sale value of $198,658 to the DOD, which are mainly, 172K, for the MK 13 MOD7 trigger assembly. When USASOC buys stuff for the sopmod, like optics, the contract usually calls for 20,000 + units ( well, think about the number of special forces personnel in the US ) No contract is recorded in FY2018 for the DoD yet.

However, Giessele did sell about 3/4 million dollars worth of MK4 and Mk7 rails to the army and navy in 2015, so there are probably 2000 of these things floating around already.

That pictures above looks like a promotional pic, I don't believe it is a picture of an actual user.

So what do you guys think of the new URGI or unofficial "Block III"?

Geissele ACH, Mk16 rail, DD 14.5 mid length

Not anywhere close to Block III, and definitely not an in the wild pic.

Aside from the new MK16 rail, there isn't anything that special about the new URG-I. While it is a pretty interesting design, it is sitting very close to being overpriced and overhyped, if anything props should be given to Geissele and their marketing team for blowing this up.

There is no "Block III" It will be the URGI. It will include a midlength gas system, which is a huge divergance from the carbine gas system currently in use with the mil. MLOK as well is a huge step forward. So yeah its pretty special when you compare it to the current issue Block II/ RIS II etc. Its not "special" if you are into all the new shiny rails and barrels on commercial AR15's but for guys who like to shoot military clones it is.
You are right about it being a marketing pic though.

Building a similar (quality)upper will cost you:
DD barrel 420 CDN (at least)
upper 250
rail 400
Milspec BCG 280
Ambi CH 130
LP gas block and tube 130

hmmmm 1610 CDN.

I think we're arguing the same point here, I was trying to state that the new URG-I will not become Block III, as Block III isn't a real thing yet and this is just a new URG, my apologies I guess my first post wasn't quite clear enough on that.

And yes absolutely, compared to what is already on the market there isn't anything special about the new URG-I, there's no new groundbreaking technology or advancements with this URG. It is only significant because this is the first somewhat large step by USMIL to catch up to some of the latest and greatest offerings of the industry, something members have already been doing for years using personally acquired optics, rails, and sometimes even complete personal URGs over their issued kit.

Pretty good estimate on building a comparable upper, for the URG-1 specifically I would guess it would come closer to $2K CAD landed cost after all is said and done. While USASOC obviously saw a positive cost/benefit relationship for this URG, I can't see it for myself and will happily stick with my current Block II clone, hence why I believe the URG-I is overpriced and overhyped for the commercial market.

Great looking clone!
I agree that the URGI isn't groundbreaking, and the Block II like you have there is a solid reliable setup.

If you read through some of these open sourced materials out there, there is not a SOCOM wide solicitation on the big "timeline" for a new upper receiver or rail, unlike optics and new advanced sniper rifles. There is a mention of an "IRG", but unlike ASR there aren't any 'requirements' written down for solicitation, but more like USASOC is putting things together for themselves, probably started and driven by a few units.

My guess is that certain special forces groups in the USASOC are using their own money to buy the things they like, but officially SOCOM as a whole has not make a plan to use their money to procure anything yet. If there is not a plan right now, this means it won't happen for at least 2 years. However, this doesn't mean USASOC and certain units cannot use their own money and do their own things....to certain extent.

Not sure the RIS2 contract is completely used up or has expired, but it is probably a case of if you want to use the big money pool you will get RIS2, but if you want something else for yourself you have to use your own allotted coins. Just like how certain top tier units have bought HK416 and 417 and have them decked out with Giessele triggers.

Another point, has anyone on here tried making a more up to date clone by using FN parts? Since they have been supplying the rifles since ~2013... That's where I'm heading with my clone.
