Colt USA & Canada Financial Woes??

either the choice of driving 2 hours and possibly get harassed and get my nr rifles confiscated by a co because they look scary
or drive two hours and across a border and go play in the forest with some steel targets, my pistol and my AR

I considered that too but never entertained the the bureaucratic process of bringing my guns to US. How does that work anyway ? Is it complicated ? I'm sick of shooting 5 round mags, I feel like I'm taking a part in a psycho movie.

We are run but people like that in Canada.

You need to send in your BATF forms for your firearms you want to bring over there temporarily, they will send you a reply whether they allow it or not, bring those replies with you at the birder, tell the customs you're bringing in firearms and that you have the forms, they'll ask you to go in, they check the firearms and the authorizations from BATF. You're good to go.
Coming back into Canada tell the customs guy you have your own firearms coming back in, they'll check your license, your registrations if they are restricted, the firearms, probably the mags, you're good to go.

You might feel a little awkward the first time, but after you know the process you'll be a whole lot more comfortable. You just need to plan your trips to the USA a lot in advance so that you can get the BATF forms and the replies and all.

No Chinese firearms are allowed in, a bunch of other firearms too that make no sense, but essentially if your barrels are more than 16 inch and the firearms are american you're good to go.

As it is essentially a national security asset, I wouldn't worry about Colt Canada...it would be nationalized in a heartbeat if necessary to ensure it continues to supply the CF.
so the taxpayers would have to support another company that can't turn a profit without being government sudsidized? no thanks

Colt certainly seems to have a history of expecting the good times to roll forever.

From the mid 90's to 2010 Colt totally shunned the consumer market, because they had an exclusive selling the M4 to the US military, at double what they were worth. They treated civilian owners like they didn't need them.

Then, when the M4 become open to bids, Colt all of sudden was tripping over themselves to offer guns to us commoners, in a booming market. It would seem they became a little too beggarly to be choosy.

Now, after more than 15 years of ridiculous profits, a single year of bust has them on the edge of bankruptcy. Clearly not a bunch that is adept at planning ahead.

Thanks for the info Mike, I'll definitely look into it.

The low AR prices you see down in the US is not sustainable and it is not normal at all. It is happening because big guys like Freedom Group and Colt USA are taking close to a 50% hit in the gross profit due to drastic cut in volume. They are selling things at a price point just to pay for their fixed overhead costs. This is bad and it is an interim solution to downward adjusting capacity, ie, laying off people and closing some lines.

Unfortunately, Canadian manufacturers, who are in a much smaller scale, are forced to compete against big manufacturers who only care about to make enough to not lose money in the short term. It is a losing battle for Canadian manufacturers.

Obama was the best gun sale man for a year, but he wrecked the industry. The current low prices are nothing to celebrate - the manufacturers are suffering and it is the way to cope with the aftermath of a panic buy in the short term.

The industry will recover after some adjustment to the capacity and financial restructure, but the days of cheap AR won't last and it should not. Highly discounted products at the manufacturer level is a last ditch effort for companies to stay afloat in the short term. T

he general US economy is improving, but CDN dollar is staying weak while oil price is not expected to recover soon. The same US prices that you see right now are already 6 to 7 % more in CDN dollars than in the beginning of the year. US prices will rise back and we will continue pay more due to weak CDN dollars.

There is more to this... Many manufacturers went after the quick buck and forked out money or worse took loans to buy space and machines.. Machines and space they no longer need... There are many who were criticized for not being able to meet demand a year or 2 years ago... and Some that outright said they were not going to go into debt to meet that hyper-inflated demand... These companies will do well..

this is an absolutely FASCINATING article! There are some details that don't sound quite right (like "...Colt saw Italy’s Beretta snatch its main U.S. Army sidearm contract...."- far as I knew, the US military hadn't bought 1911's since WW2, and had just relied on war stock ) .

But on the whole, it's quite an indictment of the whole Gordon Gekko "Wall Street" mentality of the 1980s, with a dash of polticis (state, federal, NRA) thrown in.

awesome find, thanks for posting the link.

....and yeah, sounds like it might be a good time to buy that genuine Colt you've been hankering for!
