Combination rifle?

I have had a Heym Model 22S since I had it imported over 35 years ago and have hunted with it extensively. It is what they call a bochbuchsflinte, an over/under rifle shotgun combo. They were/are available in 12, 16 or 20 gauge over most common european rifle calibers and some American non magnum calibers such as .308, 243, 223 and others. I ordered mine as a 20 guage (3") over 7x57R with a scope mounted in quick detachable mounts and an easily removable .22 LR insert for the shotgun barrel, intended use : grouse, ptarmigan and rabbits for small game and mountain goat, sheep and moose for large game. Well, for several reasons it only got used on a couple of sheep/ goat hunts but has been used almost annually for moose/ small game and now mostly deer/small game and it has been so useful and versatile that I eventually sold off all my other rifles and this is my huntin' gun. Excellent caliber for moose and deer with the right bullets and I never lack for grouse. Many German manufacturers of this sort of gun and quite a few Italian gun companies make some really nice ones at comparatively moderate prices. Check our FAIR to start. J.

I have the baikals 12/3006 and use them more than my normal rifles. Good quality for the dollar and use the weaver 22 rings or the weaver t010 base and quick release base with low power scopes. Mostly use for chicken hunting but in case a big game gives me the rifle option.

One of the better ones was made by valmet of Finland.I have a nice Savage 2400 in 12/308 also made by Valmet in the mid 70s they are real nice guns

I like the idea of a combo gun, but I have never been able to find one that perfectly suits what I am after.

I want something that is good for moose, and something that is good for small game on the way back from the stand.

I would either want a 12ga on a 22, slugs for the big ones and 22 for the critters, or alternatively a 308/30-6 on top of a 20 ga.

All the combo guns I see are either big/big 12ga on a large rifle cartridge, or small small, 20 ga on a .22.

I want a big/small combo gun. Anyone?

Thats what
I would like as well, havn't found the right one yet....

Great thread, I'm subscribed. I really like the savage 24. It handles really well, but it's probably underpowered in the centerfire department.

30-30 over 20ga is about as good as it gets - love that the rifle barrel is over top of the smooth one, and they can be had for $600-$700. Traditionally combo's are built with the hi-power round on the bottom where the action is strongest.

I've seen some for sale stamped Merkel, never owned one though... I think Prophet River has a couple on consignment.

My ideal combo would be 22mag/308.

I'd also accept 22lr or 22mag combined with 243, 260, 7-08, or 308.

Of course, 22lr/243 would be pretty sweet. It's all I'd carry for hunting then, as I could pop a grouse in the head, or blast a deer, and only have to carry the one rifle.
