Compact brush/forrest rifle options? (White tail)

Love it! What a nice bush rifle plus it could do the occasional long powerline shot too.

Lever guns are ghey! I'm glad Remington didn't make the 870 in a lever action. :dancingbanana:

Having said that ..... I can't imagine a better "bush" gun than a 20" bbl 760 in 308 with a Lyman all steel receiver sight. This thing screems FUDD!

My choice for a bush rifle is a Ruger Frontier Compact in 358 with a 1.5X5 Leupold.
With a 16.5" barrel its short, reasonably light and very accurate.
Usually when I'm in the bush the scope is turned down to 2 or 3X .

Ruger semi auto carbine in 44mag with a Bushnell Halo site on top. For me the near perfect brush gun for deer. Takes excellent care of coons and coyotes around the chicken coup at night as well.

I have a favorite :(I'm in the process of sending to a new home. My Marlin 1895GS in 45-70.

A small thinning out of some of what's in the safe. It's going to 'young son' in the B.C. central interior where I'm sure he'll put it to good use. I may;) have to see if I can replace it with, say a Pedersoli Sharps:p.

700 SPS in of your flavour of caliber and finish. Have the barrel cut back to 18" or even 16". Any money left over will define what scopes choice you will have. You should be able to pick up a decent Bushnell or Vortex. Although, I haven't looked at the prices of any of these in awhile...

If you bob the barrel shorter than 18" you are breaking the law... Not worth it. Better off buying an OEM short barreled gun.

Sorry! Hoytcanon is right. You can't cut a 'factory' barrel below 18". Like shotguns, the OP would have to buy a barrel that was manufactured shorter- which would be outside the budget. I think the AAC-SD plus optics would also be out of his price range. Anyway 18" is short enough considering suppressors are currently not an option in Canada.

I don't and never will own a lever action... But to me a brush gun means quick target aquisition and light and compact... Scope means no quick target aquisition (especially for those that want a second shot)... I can work a bolt almost as quick as a lever and they are way more reliable... I'd go with a rem model 7 or a ruger compact with open sights...

So you can work a bolt "almost as fast" as a lever action. I can acquire a target with a scope at least as fast as with open sights. And in the lower light of morning and evening the scope has an advantage over open sights.

Yes I can work a bolt almost as fast... So much so that the difference is minimal... I'll give up the tiny speed difference for the reliability of a bolt over a lever...

As far as saying a scope is better than open sights at lower light... That's contrary to anything I have seen or read...

I'm into T/C Contender carbines and lately a T/C Prohunter.

Contenders are extremely hard to find now so I'd look at the Prohunter series.

I have two barrels 30-06 & 375H&H for my Prohunter had both barrels wacked back to 22" = these are short fast handling/accurate combo's If I was looking at one rifle/barrel combo I'd go 260 Rem and have the barrel shortened to 24".

My favourite Contender carbine combo is my 21" factory tapered 375JDJ barrel loaded with 260gr Accubonds @ 2300fps.

I'm waiting on a 14" 45-70 Contender barrel to arrive right now when it gets here I'm loading 250gr Monoflex - 430gr Cast Performance hard cast in it overall length will be 29 1/2" = short/fast 200 yard deer/bear thumper.

I might have agreed with you until I started buying a little bit better glass. Now I can see through my scope well past legal shooting light, it's especially noticable against the brush, where animals and front sights disappear into the black backdrop. Not advocating shots after dark here, but it's unreal the difference a good scope makes.

I could see that being the case and have noticed simlar in regards to animals at a distance in a field... but remember we are talking about brush guns here and I have noticed wuite the opposite at close quarters in low light conditions...
