Compact brush/forrest rifle options? (White tail)

You cant go wrong with the Marlin 336c. its chambered in 30-30 and easily in your budget. its a very reliable firearm. My friend has one and he's had no malfunction in the years he's had it.

My vote is for the marlin. I have a 444p and its 18" barrel is great for packin around in the bush

Oh dandy ol' Remington Model 7 comes to mind.
I happen to know where one in SS and .308 happens to be hiding. $1100 with rings and a Leupold Compact on top.....
