Compact scope!

I had a VX 1 'shotgun scope' 1-4 heavy duplex on my M77 did the trick , I know it was not a choice of yours but suited me fine as i was not shooting gophers with a 30-06 ;)

Why not a Nightforce 1-4x ?
That Accupoint has no BDC reticle available. Thinking about your needs should help you to choose.

Sorry, guess I should have noted that! It will be used for hunting. Want to be able to make shots out to 300-400 yds. Thanks! To everyone who suggested Leupolds, I already have a couple of them VX111, and a Mark 4, want something different.

I've heard really good things about the new triji 1-4x24 with the Green reticule. I will be buying one eventually to try out. Really good bang for your buck.

What kind of ranges would you be hunting at ? What distance of shots are you comfortable shooting ? Down here, I would not want a scope with 4x max magnification because longer shots are both possible and likely

Then the Trijicon 1-4X isn't the best choice. It has a very simple reticle (green triangle on black post) that offers no indicators(MOA/ Mildot/other). While the scope's optics are very clear, have good light gathering abilities, and offers exceptionally quick sight acquisition (I have on my AR and I daresay it's as quick as a red dot), the green (or other color) triangle on the reticle is too big for distant targets.

Get the Nightforce and a reticle with indicators that you like. It offers more when shooting at distance (finer reticle, indicators, and better magnification) and the 2.5X is still adequate for obtaining a rapid sight picture if you need it. This is the optic I currently have on my Steyr Scout .308 and I would consider it's maximum *practical* range to be 500m.

Thank you!! Your Nightforce/ Steyr Scout combo is exactly what I am contemplating! How do you like the Scout? Have heard mixed reviews on it.

The Steyr Scout is an excellent rifle. Most people who claim differently haven't shot one (or shot one to any great degree).

I used it in the Gunsite 270 rifle course - with the 2.5 IER Leupold optic that came with the rifle. After the course I changed it out for a Nightforce - you loose small targets in the reticle at 300-400 yards. The IER scope is excellent for snap shooting, but becomes a challenge at distance. I feel that the 2.5 - 10X offers the best range of options for a "practical" rifle. It does, however, require practice to mount the rifle quickly with a conventionally mounted scope - as compared to the 2.5X IER.

The scout concept is a good one and superbly executed in the Steyr. It is possibly the best "general purpose" rifle one can buy without going custom. At ranges from 5-400m there are few few rifles that are superior.
