Consensus on 25-06 these days?

Rem 700 with Bevan King 26" stainless fluted barrel. 100 gr TSX at 3460 avg. What more can ya say? That's 257 Weatherby speeds, and a hell of a lot cheaper to load!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually max loads in the 257 Wby are 3600+ and your load seems to exceeds max recommended loads for the 25-06....according to the manuals.

What powder are you using and how many grains?

replying to your recoil question: I have Sako rifles in all three calibers, and I find the recoil of the 25-06 about midway between most loads in the .243 and .308. Very manageable for accurate big game shooting, and a bit much for all afternoon in the gopher patch.

For some long range shooting and at the same time something at the top end of the power scale for Varmint & Predator hunting, I picked up a Savage 112BVSS in .25-06. I topped it with a Leupold VX III, 6.5-20 long range scope with Varmint reticle. Long story short but with one of my 1st batches of reloads using the 117gr Sierra BT, I've got a three shot group of 0.486" shot @ 185 yds.
Good glass but although not an overly expensive rifle, it shoots like a hot damm. Good bang for the buck but I wouldn't want to pack it Deer hunting.

I used to be a big fan of the .25-06 and still have two of them but for long-range big game hunting their limitation is the wind. The mountains are always windy and the prairies are always windy and this is where this calibre shines other than light bullets get blown all over the place. Sorry, but I've pretty well retired the .25-06 and replaced it with the 7mmSTW. While the ballistics say it's a great long-range calibre.........cross winds say it's not! For a large varmint rifle sure....for a sheep rifle....nope.

I have the 26 inch 112 lrpv with a vx-3 6.5-20 varmint hunter reticle as well, and can get easily over 3400 fps with 54 gr 4831 and 100 grain bullets.Took a couple of nice deer with it,really like the 100 gr accubond performance as well.Very nice long range rig, shot it out to 700 meters with great accuracy.500 meter gongs are easy for even a first time shooter with this rig!!!

I have a couple of Bevan's bbls [375Chatfield-Taylor and a 257Roberts] and both are surprisingly "fast" with resonable loads.

They make the LRPV in a long action?

25-06 load

I am using 54.5 gr of RL 22, with CCI match primers. This was a 10 shot cronographed group too, and shoots 1/2" at 100. For the cost of loading 257 Roy he can have the 100 fps!! The barnes max load for the 100 gr TSX is 55.5 gr doing 3320, in a 24" barrel. Barnes max with the Roy is 3503 and 3596 with the 2 powders listed.

how much does the wind affect a 117gr bullet in the 25/06 compared to say a 6.5x55, a 270, and a 308?

I know when comparing the 117 in 25-06 to my 7STW in 150 grain...there is about 40% more drift with the .25-06. The 25-06 drifts almost 13 inches in a 10mph wind at 400 yards....a calm day in the mountains! But what do I know.........

Well for certain you have great lungs:D I been in the hills , steady wind is pretty hard to find.
As for the 25 and stw , their pretty much the same cartridge eh;) also a component is missing , distance , is that at 100 or 500 meters? not that it matters as these 2 are so much not alike , an 06 case, and a 8 mil mag case;)

Just referencing my original post #25 and Hansol's above with info I am familar with, that's why the comparison of two cartridges that aren't alike...the question was asked.......but sorry, you are right, that was at 400 yards. Yup, steady wind is hard to find but a strong one sure isn't! For the little bit of time I spend in the mountains, I just figured the .25 wasn't for me despite killing a few sheep with it.......but I'm sure there are people on here with far more sheep hunting experience that I!

Hey guys,

not trying to start a dispute or whatever, just looking for real-life experience regarding the cartridge. I know absolutely nothing about it, nor do I have any friends that fire it, so it's always nice to hear from people who've "been there, done that"

Thanks for all the replies so far. Sounds like it will be a really good fit for what I am looking for.

:redface:Haven't had mine all that long, but I have to admit, all it's punched so far is paper.

It's boring to shoot what ever I aim at inside of 500 yards drops in its tracks probly one of the most accurate rifles i've ever shot

savage made the lrpv in 25-06 up to a couple years ago laminate stock,26 inch barrel,do not know why they dropped the long action from their lineup, love this rifle!!

I have a Ruger MKII Hawkeye Alweather in the 25-06.
I took two deer this year with it. 117g nice little hole in, big hole out.
I would definitely go to a much lower grain and different bullet if I wanted to keep yote fur. Nice and flat shot with little to no recoil. Ammo is about a third of the cost of my 257 Wby.
