Does anyone know the legalities of winning a firearm as a prize in shooting competition in the U.S. and importing it back into Canada?

If it's a SIG P320, they cannot export it - Military firearm. I won one last year and ended up selling it to a friend.

If it's on a gift certificate, and it can take 9 months to receive, it will more than likely say "Must be a US citizen residing in the US."

If it's on a prize table, then an FFL dealer who is licensed to export must be used.

Sell it down there and buy up here. Too much aggro.

I won a Glock a while back, but what the match Dir. did was issue a certificate of sorts listing all the Glock models and you chose which one you wanted.
Obviously I wasn't going to choose anything that would be a prohib. in Canada so I decided on a G17.
I called the Glock USA number on the certificate, sent them a copy... They contacted the Canadian distributor and in a couple of weeks the gun was delivered to my house via Purolator.
Easy peazy.

Beware of Ar-15's won in the USA....most lowers are milled out for the full auto fire controls.
I have heard of people selling firearms to USA competitors at matches for cash, sometimes worth it considering the importation hassles getting it to Canada, shipping etc..
But most firearms can be imported/exported legally thru Irunguns or the like.

Could you sell it to a local gun shop or pawn shop?

If it's a certificate you could - if they wanted it; but you can't take physical possession of the gun to do that.

Some big matches that know they're getting a lot of foreigners will offer a buyback for cash during the awards.
I got $350 for an M&P certificate one year.
$250 for a EAA Force another year.
(The guy buying the certs back usually makes decent $$ in the process.)

Yup... That's indeed true... Prevents any of us from say selling it in the parking lot after the awards banquet.
Some arrangement can be made with the FFL present..

'Seen this as well... Prize table had guns with cash alternative certs. Take the gun or take its value in cash.

That makes sense. I reckon they get a lot of Canucks competing stateside each season.

I won a revolver several years ago and not knowing what the process was I contacted a friend who is a Canadian Dealer that imports firearm for people. He looked after everything and all I paid was a brokers fee. The gun came in with a shipment of other guns he was importing and the best part was it almost beat me home from the US.

I wonder if iRunguns could import it for a fee?
