Converting a Model 10 12.6 to something more politically correct...

This has become a fun little project.

A fellow on here has been kind enough to offer me a 5" barrel that will work. Spoke to my smith this morning and he'll polish and blue the new tube and install. Total cost for the project is a titch over $200.

For purposes of the course, the gun must be disabled and not dewatted. I'll pull the firing pin and I'm good to go. I'm conscious of the fact that I won't always be teaching this course - might want to quit in 20 or so years - and it'd be nice to have something that wasn't cut up like a Christmas turkey, and easily restored to shooting condition.

Thanks for the suggestions, lads. Just for poops and laughs I'll give Del Selins a buzz and see what they have that'll work.

Wow, lucky you. I used to have a WTB 4.2" or longer S&W model 10 barrels and nothing ever came up. The only barrels I found were for a model 14 and cost $250 IIRC, add in gunsmith and it wasn't a cheap venture. It's too bad too because a fellow was trying to sell a few prohib model 10s and 13s for cheap. You just had to supply the barrel and he'd take them to his gunsmith and get it registered as restricted. I don't think he had any luck either because now I see that he had them all dewatted.

I'd still like to get my hands on a barrel for a decent price. I'm not picky either since I don't own the revolver. I'd take anything that would work on a model 10/13, Colt PPS or Ruger Security Six (have a WTB up for the Ruger).

A welded up deactivated revolver would be useless for the course since you can't swing the cylinder out to load and unload dummy rounds.
Isn't that the point of having a revolver in the course?

Here is a link to a seller in the EE for some dewats if you don't need a gun that cant do anything. Bit pricey IMO, that's what they go for in working condition.

Actually those are the ones I was talking about in my last post. I don't think he's making any money on them. IIRC correctly he was trying to sell them in working condition for between $250-300. It looks like he never got any takers. I think it was about a year ago when I saw his original ad.

DEWATS normally cost more than a functioning gun because you have much larger market/customer base.

Making it into a restricted just to use in a course. THAT silly game. I'd be more in favor of keeping it a prohib for the sake of the course to show the new shooters how silly the law is that we have.

Now making it into a restricted so it can be owned and passed on to the next generation is another issue. I'm all in favor of THAT.

I'm not sure that the mod falls into the easy/cheap option though. On a S&W there's the ejector stub locking point that needs to be on the barrel and it needs to be in the right place for the model of the gun.

The member weimajack has sold a couple of ex-prohibs that were sleeved with a longer liner and given a little added collar around the muzzle to increase the length to a nice restricted 4.25". It would be worth contacting him to find out who did the work. This way it maintains the original barrel and locking lug location.

This is a completely illegal conversion, and, I NEVER done this kind of conversion.

AND, never sold any ex-prohibs converted like that.

I am really interested to know where you found this information, because it's completely false.

IN ALL CASE, BARREL HAVE TO BE REPLACED FOR A NEW LONGUER ONE, AND, OLD PROHIB ONE HAVE TO BE BRING TO POLICE FORCE FOR DESTRUCTION.

Wow, you had to drag up a nine month old thread to defend your honour?

Too bad you weren’t so law abiding when you sold me an illegally cut down Mossberg 500 with 16” barrel. Thought I was buying a factory LE gun but it turned out to have been obviously cut down, presumably by a police armourer. You didn’t give two ####s about my concerns when the cert showed up as having over 470mm barrel. My great deal on an LE trade in wasn’t so great when I had to track down a legal barrel for it.:(

Anyways, wouldn’t putting a 4.2” liner in the barrel be legal? Ugly, but legal no?

Altering a barrel in that manner would be perfectly legal for reclassification as restricted. The liner is continuous, full length, in excess of 105mm.
