So I'm in a pickle here. I did the mag conversion, which was actually pretty simple to install, but now I have a rifle that doesn't work.

Gun would work just fine with the stock, plastic mag prior to this. Now with this conversion, it won't feed properly and it won't extract fully. When trying to feed a new round, it seems that the tip of each round won't go high enough to hit the chamber properly and just jams into the barrel just below the chamber opening. When trying to extract, it pulls the round out about half way, at which point it seems that the next round in the magazine is interfering and causing the extracted round to be unhooked from the extractor in the bolt.

Seems odd as most of the comments I've read about the conversions is that they go smoothly and the rifles work just fine afterwards.

I've also tried with 3 different mags, and they all act exactly the same, so I'm not convinced it's magazine related.

I'm a little stumped. Is there a mystery modification that's needed to make this setup work properly? I did actually follow along with the 4 youtube videos showing how it's done, so if there is another step to perform, it wasn't mentioned in the video.

The rifle isn't filthy, it's pretty darn clean. But does it have to be polished, shiny clean in order to work properly now? If that's also the case, then I'd be better off going back to the plastic mag that worked flawlessly.

Any help, advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I hope it's something simple, even if it's so simple that I feel stupid afterwards.....

And if your having a hard time getting the bullets to feed well, a strategically placed washer betweenn the receiver and the magwell (at the rear) will tilt the magwell. Once you find the right thickness of washer, things should improve significantly. Incidentally. This applies to all 64's with the newer magwell design. I had the exact same problem with the bullet most hitting the bottom of the chamber with my daughter's brand new 64 and the washer trick solved the problem.

Thanks for the input everyone. It gives me a starting point for now. I might not get to this for a couple days, but I'll try to give an update when I do.

As for the extractor, it's the metal bar type. It's only a thin metal bar, so hopefully it didn't get bent anyways....

Always will buy old plastic clips if not broken or cracked

I intended to get rid of the plastic mag, as it's still in one piece, but I'm just going to wait until I have this conversion working smoothly before I do that.

I've converted several to the metal mag type and never had an issue. Did you kit come with a new barrel clip. Don't know the actual name but the metal bridge that gets screwed down and holds the barrel in place. That could be a source of issue if that wasn't replaced

It did come with a new clip. It also came with a new stud that threads into the clip, you know the one that you later put the screw in to hold the bottom plate/stock to the whole action. That little stud wasn't working out very well, so I just used the original. I hope that's not giving me that much grief. The youtube vid shows the guy using the original stud and screw from his Cooey.

I think I've got it all sorted out, well to about 95%.

My extraction issue seems to have been with how the extractor was sitting. I took it out, cleaned it (it wasn't dirty but had a bit of grimy oil) and put it back and noticed that the extractor hook wasn't as far into the bolt face as it could be. A bit of fine tuning with the needle nose pliers, and it was sitting nicely again. Gave it a test run now it's dragging out every single casing!

As for the feeding issue, as suggested, I put a small washer under the rear of the new mag well. Gave it just enough tilt that it seems to be feeding just fine now.

For test firing, I tried some CCI Quiets. It would fire and extract every shot, but the bolt would only travel back far enough to extract the spent casings and not far enough to feed the next round. No big deal considering the type of ammo.

Tried some American Eagle. No problems extracting and feeding until I got to the last round of the first mag, it jammed. I think that was a one-time issue though.

Next up was some CCI Stingers. Fire, extract and almost feeding. Not sure if they are just a tiny bit tight in the chamber, but I was having to give the bolt a little bump to fully close it for about 5 out of 10 rounds. I did put the gun on the ground to reload some mags though, perhaps a little dirt got in there because the bolt sounds like it has a wee bit of grit in it. Going to take it apart and give it a good cleaning now, but it's at least working now.

There may be a little fine tuning along the way, but it's functioning......mostly, hence why I said about 95%.

Thanks again for any input, gave me the starting points I needed!

^This sounds like heresy for any metal-on-metal contact, but run that bad-boy dry. Clean every 500-1000 (brake cleaner is cheap and awesome) but put no lube of any kind in the receiver unless storing/rust prevention. Round nosed ammo are best. For me AE, Fed Champion, CCI Blaser for bulk...I have no joy with anything winchester or remington(except Rem sub-sonic...they are actually purty darn gud). Other folks love winchester in their's...

Don't get them from Western Gun Parts unless you want to spend a fortune for the same thing you can order from Savage in Ontario for near 1/2 the cash........Harold

You don't have a screw dragging slightly on the bottom of the bolt per chance there passach?

Never thought about that one, I'll check that when I'm cleaning it.

I didn't know where else to get it, so I got it from Western Gun Parts. If I remember correctly, it was about $65 and included 1 magazine, which sell for about $20 at Cabelas.
