So quite some time ago my Grandpappy gave my dad a Cooey 75, then years later my dad game me his Cooey 75, and now we're luckily still able to own firearms, so the plan is to get my son into junior rifles and I plan to give it to him. Problem is it was starting to show age. We're REALLY good to firearms in this family...the cooey even has the original bore brush, but the finish has seen better days. I damn well forgot to snap a pic but it looked almost identical to this:

So I took it apart, re-blued the parts (they were in good shape, didn't do the barrel, it is like new), and sanded the stock:

Got it down to bare wood, with just one ding I couldn't get out and a bit of discolouration around the buttstock, and then hit it with a coat of Tru-oil:

I sanded it with 1000 grit sandpaper and then did a few more coats with 000 steel wool in between.

I did one light 'buffing' with the steel wool after the last coat to just knock down the shine a bit and reassembled:

I'm very pleased with the finish. Do know that if it had been an old war horse I wouldn't have touched the finish, but hopefully it's nice enough that it will get passed down a few more times in the family :)

Great job. I have 2 75s, and they are great shooting rifles. That looks like your kid's grandkids could be shooting it someday.

You should post this in the Cooey makeover sticky at the top of the page.

One problem though - your fridge has a Boston bruins logo on it. I recommend a few hundred big-bore rounds through it, and then finish it off with fire.

Thanks for the inspiration. I have a 75 just waiting for a similar makeover. When the snow fly's I'll have to get at it

He can be forgiven for the Bruins logo because there is a can of Guinness in both pics!

One great thing though - your fridge has a Boston bruins logo on it. I understand they dominate all lesser teams in the east.

Yikes, didn't see the Cooey sticky.

Nice job. I inherited my fathers old 75 and its in pretty rough shape. I don't think it had ever been cleaned or oiled. I'm in the process of tearing it down right now for refinishing. Hopefully it turns out as nice as yours.

Just did the same for my 750. Put tung oil on it, looks great, the little bunnies are running free. Really accurate with shorts, doesn't like the longs as much.

The finish came off REALLY easy, I used some 50 grit sandpaper and a rubber block and just went with the grain, then sanded with finer grit, and finally with the steel wool (I find that brings out the indentations in the grain better). That old shellac almost fell off.

I didn't use tung oil because I used that on an outside bar top once and it tended to get tacky in the hot weather, someone said that tru oil won't do that. However, I may just have had cheap tung oil :)

I'll have to grab some shorts to try with it, I haven't fired it in probably 20 years. I kind of got tired of teeny bullets, but they definitely are more cost effective!!

I used furniture stripper then sanded. had to get a new rear sight too. Those shorts are funny looking for sure but great for the partridge. Its a lot of fun to restore these old guns as im sure you know.

That looks really nice. I have one that my mom sold to me for $20 when I was younger, she figured I would appreciate it more if I paid for it. The rifle belonged to an uncle and I don't know if he did or someone else did but they changed the stamp on the barrel from cooey to fooey ( lol ), great old rifles. Congratulations!
