Cooeys

I going to diverse this thread a wee bit (not completely hijack).

I got a SureShot 22lr (identical to my father-in-law's Cooey 600). Anyone know how to take the bolt out of the rifle and how to take the bolt apart? I'm getting firing problems with it (changed to three different ammos, and getting no fires--not even hitting the brass). Bought the gun from a farm auction and it needed a good cleaning when I got it.

Actually no. I thought I did, but I'm feeling kinda stupid right now. I can't seem to get the bolt out.

The spring inside the bolt seems to be alright (when you load it, there is pressure on the rear half of the bolt), The head of the firing pin does not seem damaged/bent/flattened.

So here is my noob questions
1. How in the world do you remove the bolt? (I believe it is a cooey 600 type--made by sure shot. It's a bolt action tube feed)

2. How to disassemble the bolt to inspect the firing pin and spring?

This worthless gun is like my old dog; there both my first, so they hold a lot of sentimental value to me.
 
Well I should be able to help you remove the bolt.

1. Unload and make firearm safe (ACTS & PROVE firearm). Clear work area of any ammo

2. Remove stock.

3. On the same bolt that holds the stock on also places presure on the tube for the mag. Loosen the screw to allow movement. You should now be able to detach the end of the mag from the bolt.

4. Depress trigger and move bolt reward. Bolt should slide out.
 
I have an old Ranger repeater my brother-in-law gave to me, no interest in shooting sports, so I have it now, and there's a 500-brick of Federal American Eagle in the cabinet... Just biding my time and then those cottontails will beg for mercy!
 
I have 2 maybe 3, a couple of 60 repeaters, and a single shot with the name of Hiawatha. The repeaters' were bought for $40 and $25. They are a little on the used side,but shoot wonderfully,easily grouping 1in.@25yds using open sights. The Hiawatha was given to me without the bolt(lost). I picked up a Cooey 39 bolt for it and except for the odd extraction issue it shoots just fine. Do any of you know whether Cooey made the Hiawatha single shot?KD

John A. Belton, in Cooey Firearms Made In Canada 1919-1979 (at only 32 pages, the sole reference on Cooey that I am aware of) has this very brief entry on that name:

"HIAWATHA
House brand for MacLeod's Limited of Winnipeg, Manitoba, for distribution to the retail markets in Western Canada. A friend recalls buying a single shot (Model 39 or 75) in Spirit River, Alberta, in 1958, which would indicate Cooey era production. Now known in Model 60 Bolt Action Repeater and Model 64 Semi Automatic. Later of Winchester-Cooey era."

Note: The "Cooey era" and "Winchester-Cooey era" references relate to the fact that the H.W. Cooey Machine and Arms Company Limited was sold in April of 1961 to Olin-Mathieson Ltd., thus becoming a division of Winchester-Western (Canada) Ltd.

Cooey firearms were sold under many different names over the years (many of them house brand names for various retail chains): e.g. "Ace", "Bisley", "Cadet", "Canuck", "Eatonia" (T. Eaton Co. Ltd.), "Hawkeye" (Northern Hardware Co.), "Hiawatha" (MacLeod's Ltd.), "H.W.C.", "Hygrade", "Jack Rabbit", "Maine", "Mercury" (Woodward Stores), "Mohawk", "Paramount", "Rabbit" (J.H. Ashdown), "Ranger" (T. Eaton Co. Ltd.), "Sears" (Simpson-Sears and later Sears Canada), "Sniper" (Marshall Wells Hardware Co.), "Sport", "Sportsmaster", "Straitline", "Sure Shot" (Robert Simpson Co. Ltd.).
 
Interesting info, Grant R.! I have an F/N single shot with "The Maine" roll-stamped into the barrel. With all the Belgian proof marks on the barrel, there's no way it could be a re-barrel. It appears that Cooey used a lot of the F/N design elements in his receivers- at least for the bolt and bolt slot, and firing pin and spring systems. The Cooey extractor appears to be original and unique- I haven't seen an extractor of this design on any other single shot....

Met an elderly gentlemen in Merrickville, Ontario who loved his job at the Cooey factory. He said they got free ammo :D

I believe that when Winchester bought up Cooey, they re-designated the Cooey model 60 to the Winchester Cooey model 600.

Some later model 600's (like mine) have dovetail grooves in the receiver, which will let you mount a scope without drilling and tapping. I fitted a 15 buck 4x12 Bushnell scope to mine last week. Haven't had the opportunity to sight it in yet.

Before the scope, I'd only put five shots through it. It was while visiting friends up in Powassan about 2-3 weeks ago, and it was -20 w/o windchill. I was more worried about my fingers freezing than accuracy, so beats me how I did. :)
 
I have a model 75 single shot that was old when it was given to me 30 years ago. Excellent shooting gun. I filed down the trigger a bit to make it lighter and also modified the front sight. Nice heavy barrel and plenty of wood. Killed a lot of gouphers with it. Also won a few turkeys.
 
So where does the Cooey 750 fit in? I was just given one a few weeks ago. It looked like a beater but after refinishing the stock and cleaning up the barrel abit, It's actually a looker! It looks like walnut, could it be??? Very impressed with the build quality!

Cooey Replacement Stock?

Hello Jason:

Nice pictures! Is that a replacement stock that you have on your Cooey and if so, where did you purchase it from? Thanks for your assistance.
 
Actually it's the original stock. I refinished it and painted it camo. I also added some sling swivels. Then I put a protective layer of satin clear. The pics don't do the gun justice. I'll take some outside later this week. -Jason
