Hey Guys;

My wife & I are looking at picking up a couple Model 54 Coopers... My wife wants one with beautiful wood & I want one in synthetic (Maybe I'd take wood... Not sure...)

Calibers... 243 & 308... Boring, but its what we want.

What scope would you guys put on them? Gotta be a nice piece of glass, so I need your recommendations for glass as well!

Clay at Prophet River said anything is possible with Cooper, so I thought I would ask you fine folks what exactly we should consider... Engraving, gold inlay, custom serial numbers etc etc etc...

One thing that will have to happen is fitting of the rifle for my 5'0" wife... I'm the typical 5'10" guy, so no special fitting will be required for me...

Thoughts guys?

Cheers & THANKS in advance for the suggestions!
Jay
P.S. I wish Cooper's website was more interactive, so you could 'build' your gun on their website... And SEE what it would look like with the various options...

i like plain rifles. either blued or ss synthetic. i have an excalibre with no mods. its one of my favorite rifles. i wouldn't have engraving or inlays. if you like wood cooper can set you up with some very pretty stocks. myself i would be afraid to hunt with them.

Not sure which model you are looking at for the wood stocked one for your wife, but if you are putting out extra money for wood, I'd upgrade to the high gloss blue if it's not a custom classic. Custom serial numbers are kinda cool and as I remember not that expensive. For glass I'd go with a top end Leupold. For me a US made scope just seems right on a cooper.

I don't have a Cooper, but for a traditional, wood stocked rifle, I'm thinking a Swarovski 3-9x36. I would love one for my Husqvarna FN.

Was just looking at Cooper rifles last night, the synthetic, fluted really caught my eye, not sure of model? think it had fluted bolt also.
My favorite scope Swarovski 3.5-18 with talley lightweights would do this rifle justice,,,,,,someday, maybe,,,
You and the wife spending the inheritance? At least there'll be a couple nice rifles to pass around
Enjoy and post reviews, sub .5"?

Unfortunately, no kids here... Always wanted them, just never been blessed with kids. We've been together 20 years...

Just this past deer season my wife said how she'd like to have a NICE big game rifle & suggested getting a couple Cooper rifles...

The last year has not been easy on either of us, so we just want to treat ourselves to something nice...

Cheers

Picked up a Model 54 Excaliber in .260 Rem (coal-coloured synthetic stock with red web-like highlights ). Awesome little rifle.

Considering the light recoil and ability to use heavier bullets, perhaps your wife would think about a .260 rather than a .243? The recoil is modest with the 129 grain bullets.

I'd like a custom classic in .280 with french walnut, inlaid swivel studs, skeleton butt plate, and a checkered bolt knob. Simple, classy, elegant. I don't think I'd pay for any extras on a synthetic stocked rifle, and engraving and gold plating is for double guns IMO.

Nope, she's a 243 fan... I've tried to get her to look at 7mm08 etc., but she's having none of it... ha ha

I'm a big fan of fancy lumber as well, and find tasteful engraving appealing. Here's a suggestion for you: Why not find a seat sale to Edmonton and drive out to Lloydminster to see for yourself? If it's just the two of you it would be easy enoungh to make a long weekend out of it plus hammer the West Edmonton Mall? I think they still have the indoor range there. That way you could shoulder some of the models in stock and see which ones feel the best, plus the wife could get a good measurement on her length of pull etc.

If you're going to spend that kind of dough on a decent rifle, why not spend the extra on a fly in?

I really like my model 52 and am looking forward to taking it out in two weeks for a several day hunt. It has accuracy that I can rely on and that's very important to me.

West250, THIS is what my wife has already said! HA HA HA, too funny you said the EXACT same thing! Fly there & order the rifles, fly back to get them when they arrive from Cooper!

Jay, are you willing to adopt a 41 year old? I can act quite immature if needed!!! I think you need an exhibition walnut stocked Cooper in 270 Win topped with a Schmidt und Bender! lol

So far, no pics from any above post?

Show your cooper and scopes if you have them

Out of the three Coopers that we own, two rifles we ordered by selecting our wood blanks. One blank was from Clay and the other from Watts Walnuts. Watts Walnuts mailed my blank directly to Cooper where later I informed Clay and Cooper of my intentions. The gun is chambered for a 6.5x284 Norma and the only option I added was the Classic Custom checkering and a 26 inch barrel. I received my firearm 7 months after I ordered it.................great service!

I'd go with a colour case hardened action and Talley rings with a Leupold 2.5 x 8.
I like the ebony tip of the custom classic, but prefer the point checkering to the fluer de lis.
I like the Neidner butt plate too. :)
