Cooper Firearms, what options? POST 38 need your GLASS opinions!

My wife & I just placed our order with Clay @ Prophet River for two Classic Model 54 rifles, one in 243, one in 308.

They will have custom consecutive serial numbers, checkered bolt knobs, 24 inch barrels, matched dark knotty wood (wife's request, he he) and a custom length of pull of 12.5 inches for her rifle while mine will be the standard 14.25

Pics to follow... In six months... LIFE IS GOOD!!!

Cheers
Jay

Just to be sure, standard LOP is NOT 14.25. More like 13 3/4". You will find 14.25 long, especially with a heavier jacket.

D'oh, my mistake, I told Clay that I am 'the average size guy', 5'10"... Clay said the standard LOP would be fine... I'm not sure why I had 14.25 stuck in my mind as the standard LOP...

I'll double check with Clay...

Cheers

P.S. Thanks for the heads up RickF

13.5" is generally accepted as standard LOP, though some of us have monkey arms regardless of height. :)

Just a heads up, but with only a 12.5" LOP, your options for scope mounting will be limited. You won't be able to slide some scopes far enough forward to obtain the proper eye relief with most mounting systems. A rail may be the only feasible option with some scopes.

Jay, keep in mind your hunting conditions, you two, and only you two know them best. if your quarry frequently appear at very close range, feet not yards, be sure your choice of scope gives you a low enough magnification for something other than a field of brown in the scope.
My preference, and it relates to MY hunting conditions, is a scope that ranges down to 1.5X, and that's where I keep it. Deer in spots that are further out will generally give you a longer look, time to change the power if need be.

I'm thinking of the fellow at our moose camp that shot the big black bear this year. He sat with his back against a tree overlooking a long beaver meadow below a Dam. That bear crossed the meadow behind a small tree that our man was using for cover, and appeared at ten feet from his outstretched feet. His scope, I think it goes to 24X, and has a 50mm objective, I don't know where he had it set, showed him only Black when he looked through it. Very disconcerting for him, but he did get the bear.

Take a look at the LOP that is standard on the Sako rifles.

I know how it works, 1"-1.5" btw thumb and nose when gun is shouldered, but a person needs the actual gun to adjust that via shortening/lengthening the stock or lengthening/shortening recoil pad and then it varies with what you're wearing also.

All I meant to say is that 13.5" is generally the industry accepted standard LOP, OK? :)

Most of us will do just fine with a LOP in that area and are probably not going to notice a half inch here or there for a bolt action hunting rifle. If we're talking a fitted O/U shotgun for competition sporting clays, it may be a different story.

Fit is definitely more critical with a shotgun, and with a shotgun, the LOP is usually longer yet, usually over 14".

Jay, if you are considering a Swaro I was doing some research last night and noticed site sponser plainSight Solutions is offering up the Z3 3-9X36 with a plex reticle for $719.00 TYD. Pretty decent price.

Why a 243 when Clay can get you a 260.
You handload, right?

Yes, I handload, BUT the 243 is my wife's choice not mine... I often wonder if 260 or 7-08 would have been her favorite IF she had started with them back in the day... Ah well, 243 it is, it's what she wants...

And, I must say, I'm pretty vanilla as well, considering I'm going 308 when there are ###y choices from Cooper like 6.5x47 Lapua...

Cheers
Jay
