I'm thinking of getting a Cooper varmint rifle for gopher shooter. Can MOA accuracy or better be expected? Are the triggers crisp or do they need to be tuned, if the latter can the average shooter adjust it or is it a trip to the gunsmith? Any other issues that I should know about? They are good looking rifles which is nice but I also want good accuracy.
Your comments would be appreciated.

I don't have one but have seen the test targets from 17cal up to 338-06. Most look like one ragged hole. Ask to see a target and you will be impressed. As for triggers I have no idea but would expect a nice one for that money.

I have slightly lightened the trigger pulls on two of my Cooper rifles, the other three Cooper triggers were fine as is.As far as accuracy goes, they have a 1/2moa accuracy guarantee, and I have only seen one rifle that had issues shooting consistent 1/2moa groups. That particular rifle still averaged well under moa,but it was dealt with under warranty anyways.

I couldn't find any accuracy guarantee on the Cooper website?
I have a hard time thinking anybody could deliver a true 1/2 MOA 338/06?
Not that any of this really matters, but I am curious.

IIRC the test targets are fired at 50 yards?

What calibers are your shooting Stubble?
Cooper does make a gorgeous rifle!

Guaranteed 1/2 MOA with hand loads. Mine shoots better than I do.

The now famous 1/2" at 100 yards Cooper Firearms of Montana Inc accuracy guarantee for center fire rifles began in 1998 with the introduction of the “Varminter” in Models 21 and 22. Soon after, the Montana Varminter was and became an instant classic.

I have one in 17 Rem Fireball and it's a nice rifle. I have my eye on getting something in 20 VarTarg also. It sounds like an interesting caliber to load and shoot.

When are they coming out with a magnum, thought I heard rumors of that..looked quickly on the their site, but no mention of it.

My Custom Classic 20VT will put them threw a tiny hole at 100. Never measured groups but barely out of round when I'm on a good day. Most certainly will outshoot me!

Awesome. Do you have any pics?

Not really. Here's a pic of a 5 shot group @ 100 yards (not very good), a pic of the bolt and the factory test target. I thought I had some more pics but I guess not. The next ones I reload I will use Cooper's recipe and see how they shoot.

Oh they give you the powder and bullet used for the test target. Call me dumb but I did not know that. Nice 3 shot group.

I wonder whose dies they use.

On Saubier there is a stickie with the factory Cooper recipes. I'm not sure if it states the dies used or not.

All 3 of mine will 1/4" at 100 when I do my part on a good day! Triggers are pretty nice, but I have lightened all mine myself, running about a pound and a half right now. Yes, they are pretty guns but they SHOOT as well! You will not be disappointed!

Edited to add; Their factory test targets are shot at 50 yds.

The respose is quite obvious---they look good and shoot very well. There is an article in the current issue of Varmint Hunter about the Cooper Jackson Squirrel Rifle which gives a very favourable review---also gives a history of the Cooper company

Just wondering what you did to lighten them and how difficult it was to do. Mine breaks nicely, but i wounldn'd mind if it was a little lighter and pound and a half sounds about right
