It's neat to see how others cycle the Mosin.
I have a few 91/30s and a few M38s too. My two primary shooters of those have VERY easy cycling bolts and smooth actions which allow me to only "palm" the ball end of the bolt handle when cycling.
Similar placement as when you see people in movies pass money or drugs hand to hand inconspicuously. Kinda squished in the centre of your palm.
Essentially, I'm never actually grabbing or taking hold of the bolt handle when pulling it back or pushing it forward. Just pinching it with my palm tightly. If you can imagine my description.
As a result, I've developed quite a fast technique and can get 5 shots of rather quickly and easily.

I know exactly the technique you're talking about, and to be honest, I should be more diligent about working on that. It's much faster and smoother when you get it right.

But old habits die hard. I've been "grabbing" the bolt on so many different guns for so many years, even ones that are super smooth cycling that don't require it, that it's pretty much ingrained in me now.

Might put that on my "technique improvement" list for the coming year.
 
I was lucky enough to find one of them here from a wtb. add posted. ..I wonder if they were refinished with the black enamel in Poland,..or was it done prior to the Poles taking possession of them ?....They are a nice addition to any collection....and I know I'm going to grab an M38 too... yay..

Better than some, worse than others... AFAIK, it's a Polish Arsenal refurb thing, and it holds up fairly well. When I gave my Polish refurb sks a thorough rubdown with mineral spirits to clean off the storage oils (which were not cosmoline - much thinner and easier to wipe down), the Polish finish held up as well as blueing does, and better than the BBQ paint.

Mineral spirits are a fairly gentle solvent, but still a solvent. It tends to take the shine off the BBQ paint and tone down the level of "black" to a more charcoal finish, which is actually Ok for me, because I don't want the gun to be too shiny.

The Polish refurb stayed nice and dark through the wipe-down, so I suspect it will hold up well over time. It isn't blueing, but whatever it is, it seems to hold up.

Thanks. It looks to be done well. I kind like a dull look too, this seems rather shiny. But these rifles appear almost mint after the refurb. So I guess it goes with the whole look of the rifle. Martin shipped it today so I should expect it around mon-tues according to my fellow Manitoban above us in this thread.

During my years in former East German army. I saw few arms depots painted finish on M44 or M38 always meant that they were Navy reserve guns. I guess better rust resistance during sea service. I'm assuming this M44 came from Polish navy depot since most of military practices in East german military and polish Military during cold war were almost identical
 
What about the muzzle? I want to extend the bayo on the rifle, does the black finish mar up easily? Or no more easier than when blued??

Nice looking rifle! Does the bayonet change the accuracy of the rifle if you have it deployed or not?

I haven't grouped it as hard as my SVT, to be honest, but from what I can tell, bayonet deployed or not makes no difference in accuracy or point of impact.
 
Got a box in the mail today....The M44 is in very nice shape..the finish on the metal is very well done , and the laminate stock is almost mint...if you collect mosins.....get one !

My opinion...there are a fair amount of M38s from dealers and private sellers rigjt now in decent to good condition. Where as you will be hard pressed to currently find an M44 that looks as great as these an in this good of state.
My research of the available market found most M44s to be in poor to fair condition (albeit full of character) compared to these Polish refurbs from Corwin.
I believe you will have a better chance of getting a good M38 later on than one of these more impressive M44s.

Difference is most Russian Mosins saw actual service and were refurbished. Most of the Polish ones were never used or used very little and put into storage. That accounts for the difference in condition. Each person has to decide which is worth more to them personally (condition/usage) when buying.

Yes...I know.
Next M44 I'm buying is from another site sponsored dealer and its a Czech stocked Russian one in the same price range as my incoming one from Corwin.
