During this unprecedented time there might be some new surplus firearm owners dealing with cosmoline for the first time.
Last week a received one of the new pistols I ordered during this panic, a Zastava M57. I was pleasantly surprised to see it it was NIB surplus, Covered in cosmoline. After cleaning numerous SKS's Mosins and a Nagant revolver in the past, I thought I would try a degreaser we use at work. Most Alberta oilfield workers will be very familiar with it.
Citrol..... Worked better than I could have ever imagined. The cosmoline literally turned to liquid and dripped right off the gun, Took me 15 minutes to have it thoroughly clean. The mag was jam packed as well. Pulled it apart and same treatment. Too easy it almost took the fun out of the process!
Some pics for fun, I should have took some photos of the inside, It was much worse than the pictures portray.
So if you find yourself indeed of cleaning so cosmo off a firearm, go grab a can of citrol and make light work of the process, also your gun will smell like oranges afterword's, it's quite pleasant.
