During this unprecedented time there might be some new surplus firearm owners dealing with cosmoline for the first time.

Last week a received one of the new pistols I ordered during this panic, a Zastava M57. I was pleasantly surprised to see it it was NIB surplus, Covered in cosmoline. After cleaning numerous SKS's Mosins and a Nagant revolver in the past, I thought I would try a degreaser we use at work. Most Alberta oilfield workers will be very familiar with it.

Citrol..... Worked better than I could have ever imagined. The cosmoline literally turned to liquid and dripped right off the gun, Took me 15 minutes to have it thoroughly clean. The mag was jam packed as well. Pulled it apart and same treatment. Too easy it almost took the fun out of the process!

Some pics for fun, I should have took some photos of the inside, It was much worse than the pictures portray.

So if you find yourself indeed of cleaning so cosmo off a firearm, go grab a can of citrol and make light work of the process, also your gun will smell like oranges afterword's, it's quite pleasant.

I just had to clean one of the new chinese sks and used mineral spirits that stuff cut through the cosmoline like a hot knife through butter. no elbow grease needed to rub it off it just wiped off it was pretty amazing how easily it was after hearing all the horror stories on removing cosmoline

Same here, $20 for a gallon of mineral spirits at cantire , just dropped the parts in da tray, warmed up that that jar to be like 60 deg and poured all over , no rubbing , pulled everything out in 30 min and wiped it clean , both m57 and this new batch of sks. Like it was never cosmolined at all.

Has the carcinogenic make up of cosmoline ever been revealed to us mere mortals? In industry there are grease like lubricants colloquially referred to as elephant snot, thread torquing compounds we called peanut butter, like cosmoline we had no idea as to what the "stuff" is actually made of, and like cosmoline, I assume they aren't telling us for liable reasons? ;)

The trouble is that what we’re talking about isn’t “cosmoline” which is a commercial US made product with MSDS data available. Soviet/Warsaw Pact weapons storage preservative or “artillery grease” as you might find it referenced as in their documents hasn’t been fully analyzed as far as I’m aware. Its ingredients may also vary not only over time but between countries. Personally I try and minimize lengthly exposure as being cheap and Soviet, it’s probably not good.

Iam pretty sure it prolongs life, makes skin smooth, and cures erectile disfunction. As well as enhances pheromones to attract woman... I tell myself
