Really short barrelled shotguns and rifles with muzzle brakes are sure to pizz off everyone you shoot with. Other than getting discouraged from missing a lot of targets no one is saying it can't be done. I saw brybenn break 23 in skeet with a Mossberg 500 zombie killer, no stock just 2 pistol grips.
As kennymo stated above, maybe an extra barrel in the 26-28 inch range would be better suited for skeet.
Short barrels are fun for the shooter. The rest of the squad has to suffer through the loud report and fireballs. It's rude and selfish range behavior. Kinda like going golfing and bringing a portable stereo and cranking rap music while people try to putt.
Hmm, thanks for all the replies. I think I will go for the grizzly after al. It's cheap enough that I can afford to get a proper gun for clays sometime later. I just feel the need for a fun gun to start with and it seems so cool that we can get short-barrel shotguns here in Canada so easily compared to the 'Sates.
Most people purchase a tactical type shotgun, then they shoot cans or bottles with it a few times, then they get bored, and it sits in their safe after that.
It's a fun gun, so buy one and have fun. But when you become bored with it, or frustrated by your low percentage of hits, buy a real "all round" shotgun with a 26" or so barrel and use it for skeet and wingshooting and develop some real shotgun skills.
i watched a young fellow who could consistently hit clays going two directions at once . he would take down the first one and swing on the second and nail it . the gun was an 8.5 inch dlask cylinder bore. the fun quotient is high.try one, you might like it .
I have also seen someone use a short shotgun for skeet, he told me you need to lead alot more with a shorter barrel, it also has a huge crack every time it goes off so anyone around might not like it. If you like it, then get it, as for being practical for skeet, its not the best.
You will be viewed as the Rodney Dangerfield - the rude, crude dude of the skeet range because the muzzle blast and lousy score will annoy everyone who is trying to shoot a decent score. Do the hand-thrower thing for fun in a gravel pit but don't take it to a gun club.
The 12.5" Grizzly is not a "good all around shotgun". There is a reason most shotguns don't have barrels that short - because that barrel length is not ideal for most common applications that require a shotgun. If you are really looking for an inexpensive, decent all around shotgun, forget about the Grizzly and have a look at a Mossberg 500, Remington 870 or Benelli Nova.
Well since a couple comments were made about me here. Even singled out in one lol ill add a line or two.
Yes it can be done and done well
Yes it is very fun
Yes the muzzle blast can and does piss some off
I always ask first and I get the questions like " is that Legal?" "Where's the stock?"
I've broken 24/25 on skeet with a dual gripped mossberg with a heat shield and 18.5" cylinder barrel. When I put on my ati 6 position rear pistol grip with stock on I've broken perfect scores.
The thing to remember is short guns swing fast and not very smooth. The lack of longer barrels requires more precieved lead. More daylight between target and bead. Take your time swing with the bird and don't stop th swing just follow through. My heat shield blocks out the bead on mine short mossberg. I've even shot skeet with a scoped mossberg with a custom turkey choke in. It worked surprisingly well. Skeet is about fun and get on a squad and say hey I'm here for fun do you mind? Ppl get a lot of kicks and laughs at some of the things I bring out on to the skeet field. I choke for smoke and usually shot full chokes or tighter in my sxs an ou guns.
It won't be the best choice for smashing targets but a Ferrari isn't the best choice for a daily driver either. Still the most fun u can have with your cloths on though
Shot a full round with and old 870 wingmaster with a dlask 12" barrel hanging off of it - the guys watching enjoyed the show - freaking loud... can't remember score but hit more than missed.
Agree as does most if not all clubs I have ever shot at. Depens I guess on the company one keeps some are there for fun some are there to break them all
Shot with many groups that you better not fart on the round let alone this
Fun for me is a 870 410 wingmaster against a bunch of 12ga guys
But hey To each their own
Cheers
Fuddy Duddies will cook up all sorts of reasons to dispell the 20" and under barrel lengths for skeet. Except, a longer barrel equates to assimilation, and ease. That's why they like them.
Either makes things nice and easy with a 28"er, or become a crack shot and use a shorter shorty.
Also, ranges aren't the only place to shoot skeet, so grab a friend, buy a hand tosser and and you'll eventually out shoot those duck guns.
