Coyote hunting advice needed! Using an electronic caller...

here in new brunswick the woods are filthy with yotes. Many time i set up with my foxpro and wait a minute or so for them to show up. I hunt a lot over frozen lakes and ponds using a tree stand built earlier in the year. There are some huge dogs here and plenty to be shot. Always looking for other to join the hunt with me.

I can't find a yote to save my soul here. No tracks anywhere I hunt this year for some reason.

You killed them all up your way... :)

Make your way down here, I owe you one... come before you go away for the winter... We can hit some farms in the morning, lunch at my place and hunt a few farms in the afternoon... make a day out of it....it is an open invitation for you...

Happy New Year

Thanks I'll see if I can make it work.

How about a review of the unit and remote?

Okay, I got out today & while I had no luck getting a coyote I do have initial impressions of the HELLFIRE.

(1) The call is plenty loud.
(2) The remote works well, but needs a BIGGER screen.
(3) The calls/sounds are good quality, but the calling sequences need to be longer so that you can not tell that the sequence has started over...
(4) The HELLFIRE would do well to have an integral decoy, but I think I'm just dreaming because their product line has evolved...

So, for the price I think it is a good electronic caller & I would buy it again.

Now, if I can just get the coyotes to 'co-operate'! HA HA

Cheers
Jay

I know the Hellfire is really loud and i wonder if that is part of the problem sometimes meaning that it is too loud to sound natural. It can be hard to tell how loud you're playing it because it is usually pointed away from you, having said all that I think my favourite call is the jack rabbit in distress. If you get bored one day start playing with all the crow calls and watch them swarm in looking for a fight, its quite entertaining!

I picked up the Hellfire just recently as well. Seems like a cool little unit....I haven't used it yet but will soon. Will definitely try some of the above mentioned techniques

Up here in northern Ontario we got them too... manitouland island is loaded with them....... most of the people are friendly and will let you hunt .... I plan on doing it again this year ....... down in southern Ontario would be nice not as cold as up here in Sudbury
It get abit costly with gas but the adrenaline rush is worth it I think and letting the .220 swift bark a few times is a total rush
Lol......... crack .. bang ..crack ... bang
Ok now I'm pumped .....!!!! I wanna go

Okay, got out again today & had problems with the call...

The call would play & I could raise the volume but then...

When I tried to change the sound to a different one, the call would shut off?

I'd walk up to the call, turn the switch from the on position to the off position, and then back to the on position.

Then I could play a new sound.

This happened several times & I am going to return the unit as defective? It should not be shutting off when I try to change the sounds...

Cheers

Try it now that you are home and the call is warmer up....... it's been pretty cold around these parts and they do tend to freeze up.... and the remote's range gets limited........

You will enjoy watching Nos' reaction too!

-15 isn't cold for a product that is supposed to be used during predator season... IMHO... I still think I am going to exchange this unit... It should not be shutting off when I try to change sounds...

And yes, it is something to watch Nos's reaction to some of the calls! Chuckle

When it is cold(below about -15 or -20) with regular non lithium batteries AND I get the volume too loud(max on remote) the speaker will over ride and clip and shut off on my FP wildfire 2.

Using lithium, not setting it directly on the frozen ground and not maxing the volume when it is frozen cured mine.

That may be the issue with yours Jay

Hmmm, I'll be disappointed if -15 C is the problem, heck that's most of the darn winter!

Yep, while you are correct that -15 isn't that cold, your call is made from plastic and rubber and has tiny electronic components....

Also, keep in mind that at -15, we bundle up, layer and wiggle our toes in our boots while we leave our callers sit open to the wind naked and laying in snow....... (or in our case ice crust)...... leaving everything to condensate after being take from a warm truck as well....

Returning it wouldn't hurt mind you..... so your call.... (see what I did there?)........ let me know if you are headed back next weekend, I am visiting a friend in Ottawa and want to go back now that they have more h4895 in stock and to pick up a couple of wildlife prints and tin signs I kicked myself for not buying last weekend.....

I had the most problem with mine in the past when doing all I mentioned with it sitting on ice between corn stubble rows. I picked it up and hung it off the ground on the short corn stubble and it was better but since I pooched my set walking back and forth I was still able to clip the speaker on max volume which I didn't need but it was new back then and I was doing a shakedown on everything

Just a thought, yours may be something else. I use handwarmers sometimes an foam sitting pad, lithium etc, and haven't had issue since.

I suspect the cold affected the voltage (Batteries) and that affected the voltage to the speaker driver, clipping the speaker as I asked for more and more volume. Which caused me to have to reset.

-15 should not be an issue i have run my foxpro's in -35 with no issue (except rapid battery drain) i find often having the remote in a direct line of sight with the caller helps a lot. the manufacture max distance of remote range can also be a bit generous so try bringing the caller in a bit. Lastly it would be a shame to bring in your caller to cabelas without utilizing the best reason to buy foxpro CUSTOMER SUPPORT. i cannot stress enough how awesome the foxpro crew is for customer support! i once called in about programming my remote and once the operator learned i was from Canada we ended up comparing notes on coyotes here vs the ones in his neck of the woods.

EDIT. i plan to whip out at lunch tomorrow to try my new hellfire out and i will report back if i have any issues in -25

Ive never had any real problems with the hellfire down to -36 with a -43 windchill, except the remote being slow and kind of hard to read.

I've been trying my new hellfire for the first time this weekend. .. great call but the remote won't work past 15 feet. Brand new lithium ion batteries fully charged and brand new energizer 9v in remote. Very frustrating. Sounds good tho.
Had to turn remote off to change sounds one time tho.

Used my fury 2 for couple hours in minus 25 this weekend. Not a hiccup from the caller....remote display was showing signs of the cold....slow reaction but still worked fine.

I'd return it as well
