I am asking the following for a friend who doesn't have internet access I did a search but I am starting a new thread so I can just print it off and give him your answers.

He is looking for the following
-6mm Bullet size or less
-Pelt damage is not a concern
-needs factory ammo availiable
-has to perform in a 22-24 inch barrel
-has to be able to shoot out to 500yards (not all the time but have the ability)
-He will be rebarraling a old savage so it doesn't have to be a caliber that comes in factory rifles just have ammunition availiable.

I know he would apreciate all your guys help and he thanks you in advance.

You are going to get many suggestions: Here are mine in no particular order:
223, 22-250, 243, 220 Swift, 6mm Rem (may be an issue with factory rounds for the last two). 223 likely being the least expensive and most easily obtained.

I'd also vote 243 if being fur friendly isn't a problem. But as already mentioned, 223, 22-250, 220 Swift, etc., will all work. A 22-250 would be my second choice.

without a doubt, 243 Winchester - it is a coyote hammer, and easy to find ammo and it comes in many different types for varmints from 55 grain on up to 80s

.243 or .22-250. The latter will be cheaper to feed by far if using factory ammo. You friend should check his provincial wildlife regs too, to be sure what calibers are legal. For instance, here in Newfoundland, we're limited to calibers no larger than .225" As a result, we're basically stuck with centerfire .22s.

"...if being fur friendly isn't a problem..." Use commercial fmj's.
500 is a very long way for the .243 though. With a 200 yard zero, a Remington 90 grain bullet(the weight of the reloaded fmj's I use) will drop 38.3" out at 500. Energy's 797 ft-lbs at 500. S'ok out to 300 though.

I'd also choose .243 if going out to 500yds is a definate requirement.....................However. I don't see anywhere that says what kind of Savage is your friend rebarelling? What size is the bolt face, what was the magazine designed to feed, what length is the action?
Then you will be able to better answer the question.

P.S. How big are the coyotes your shooting at sunray, the ones here in Alberta pack it in pretty quick when hit with a .243 at any range.

No restrictions on caliber here but thanks for the heads up that some provinces have them.

It's a savage so he's just going to order a bolt face from SSS for the caliber he decides on. He has a short action and long action (short action is in better shape) They were factory .22-250 and .30-06 model 11 and 111's if I remember corectly. The .22-250 he got cheap cause it's shot out. the .30-06 has a ton of rust but the action isn't too bad and thats all he will be using in the build. Mostly just surface rust he is going to get blasted and refinshed if he uses it.

savage way to go .223 if for no other reason then cheap ammo and easy of reloading mystic player can shoot one acturatly to a 1000 + yards and at that distace FMJ will pack plenty of punch and franagbles will work closer up .243 i have heard is expensive

look at what mysitc play has done you can re barrel a savage and it is easyer then remington 700

all the tools exewpt gauges to do it your self at home can be found here

FMJ's suck for killing, which it sounds like is the main idea for this gun. Flat out whacking yotes out to half a kilometer.

A 70 grain Nosler BT @ 3450 f/s with a 200y zero drops 34.6" @ 500y. 611 ft lbs of energy accoridng to the Federal ammo site. That is plenty of energy to demolish a 35 lb dog.

Don't pay attention to Bartell, this is the way he's gonna leave this world.

Using a rangefinder we have shot coyotes out past 500.
however, both the shooter and the spotter have to be experiencedin going long.
I've never used FMJ's for varmint hunting so cannot comment on them
