Just wondering if anyone had any experiance using 100grn bullets on coyotes and what is does to the pelt? Picked up a 243 to try out this year and do to no spare time over this fall havn't had time to shoot it or work up a load.

Finally had a day off and took it out and shot a few 80 and 100 grn Winchester loads - Super x I think, the ones in the grey box. The 80's seemed to be all over the place, +- 2" while I managed a .760 with the 100's. Untill I get a load worked up with a bullet of my choice, what do you think, 100's ok for saving the pelt or big hole? Thanks guys.

Depends on what 100 gr you are talking about, what you hit, how the animal is angled toward you, distance, and just plain luck.

It will penetrate well, and make two holes almost all the time. Only 100 grain I actually recovered from a coyote was shot by my son at about 15 yards, facing the animal directly. It was recovered under the hide on the left rear leg. One small hole going in was all the damage. A Nosler Partition.

But there is no way to be sure, and each shot will be different. Try it out is the only way to know.

used 243 for many years...my fav for deer and coyotes 100 grain is a great choice less wind drift and unless you hit both shoulders clean holes everytime has to be one of the best calibers out there and it saves you sighting in different weights

I just tried out a load of IMR4064 and a 58g Vmax today. One hole for 3 shots at 100 yards and the book says 3500 fps. That is what I plan on for coyotes, but a friend uses Sierra 100g BTSP for everything. He has some with 2 little holes and some you could put your head in the exit hole.

The topic of which varmint bullet to use has been beaten to death here on CGN, & should be made a sticky. IMO frangible bullets are best to use if you want one entry wound & no exit. FMJ's can also be used, but I don't like to use them because all my hunting properties have houses in all directions & ricochets make be nervous :D. Hunting bullets made for expansion are the worst choice! Usually one small entry hole & ONE BIG exit wound!

I have seen clean entry and exit wounds with 95 and 100 grain hunting bullets fired from a .243 Win. and 6mm Rem. I have seen the same bullets fired from the exact same rifles blow giant exit wounds. Catching a piece of shoulder or spine is what seems to be the cause of having big exit wounds.

This double was both shot from 100 yards with a .243 100gr Win Power Point. The one on the left there were hardly a mark on it. The one on the right... well lets just say you're looking at the pretty side of it.

It's literally hit an miss. If your after fur I would suggest a varmint bullet. maybe the .55gr silver tips or something. Try it an see.

There's a couple big ol' dogs

IMHO
If you can find a bullet that shoots well in your rifle like one hole type groups I think you will be more satisfied out hunting for any type of animal. If it ends up being a 75,87,95,100 gr what dose it matter, a well placed shot is a well placed shot. I have so far ( after a number of combos) ended with the 95 gr Hornady SST bullet, took two WT deer with it this year and either one made it one foot from where I shot it. I have not had the chance to shoot a coyote with one yet but have shot one at 450 yds with a Hornady 75 gr V-Max......one hole in and not much left of the other side. As people have mentioned, it depends on what the bullet hits when it gets there, I would rather have a bullet I know shoots well out of my gun before thinking of what it will do to a pelt. Just my 2 cents worth.....;)
Cheers

I have shot quite a few coyotes with 100gr winchester super x psp and have had bad luck with exit wounds usually to big for my likeing, my friend uses full metal jackets, not sure of the wieght though, with good results. I've also tried 55gr winchester supreme's with good results.
