Coyote,Would you hunt with a 22 Stinger?

22 Mag up to 100-150 yards, depending on conditions. 22 LR hollow points work great within 50 +/-.

Does almost zero pelt damage as well, bullet stays inside leaving a small 22 cal hole.

On the one hand I'd do it, because I know that a coyote caught in a trap dies surprisingly fast with a heart shot with a .22LR, so under the right circumstances your ethical concerns are taken care of.

On the other hand I probably wouldn't, because unlike a coyote in a trap an unencumbered coyote can cover so much ground while its dieing that surprisingly fast death that you may never see it again. Tracking a wounded coyote without snow isn't likely to be productive.

If you have three hands, there are many situations where a dead coyote is a good coyote, and it dieing somewhere else is a technicality. Self disposing coyotes could even be seen as an advantage.

Not sure about 'yotes, but an uncle of mine used a .22 for moose (snared), and he said the RN standard velocity rounds penetrated best. And, as another has stated, I have never had much luck in terms of accuracy with the hyper velocity rounds, out of any .22, and shot placement would be critical. They may be vermin, but they deserve a quick death.

No.... I wouldn't..... It's not in me to harvest an animal with a sub par caliber..... In fact, many would say I go overboard but less is never more in hunting....

My minimum coyote calibre is 223...(speaking traditional off the shelf ammo)

While i do consider them varmints, they are still living creatures doing what they are designed to do...... And as such should be taken cleanly.....

I've shot a few with a 22lr but only because it was what I had with me at the time. I'd definitely prefer something bigger, but it'll do the job if that's all that's available. I hate the idea of making an animal suffer more than needed.

I wouldn't use one anymore, but when I first started hunting I coyote hunted with guys that ran them with dogs. At 15 yrs old all I had the first couple winters was a .22 cause I couldn't afford anything else. I shot 7-8 all within 50 yds and always a head shot and dropped every one of them instantly. If I was unsure I wouldn't shoot. I ended up buying a 6mm for deer and used it for coyotes as well which was defiantly way better suited for coyotes but the 22 worked fine for me.

The stinger bullet is ultra light and highly frangible. It is a gopher bullet, not a " big" critter bullet for the .22. I once had to kill two turkey killing dogs ( coyote sized) that got in to our barn and were raising hell. All I had available was a semi auto .22 and stingers. What a mess. The bullets broke up, made ghastly surface wounds and did not penetrate sufficiently. It was not nice, not humane, and I would never do that again. At a minimum use 40 grain hollow points and limit your shots to under 50 yards, but no stingers for coyotes please. Better yet use a real coyote rifle, starting at .22 magnum and bigger.

The problem with saying online that .22 LR will work on coyotes, is that the sort of folk who take their advice online will try it... and their not the sort of folk that can pull it off.

Good point HC, however that isn't much reason for everyone else that has done it, or can do it, to speak in hushed tones.

People need to realize this is the Internet, and experience, skill level and common sense are not equal among us.

I for one am comfortable and confident taking yotes with a 22LR, but NOT taking anything at 500+ yards with any rifle. It's my own limitations.

Dependant on the Province the coyote was in and wether a license and/or tag required.s
Me, if it where a target of opportunity there would be no doubt in my mind that I would not hold back.Plus there would be four more behind the first one.
Stingers generally open up to about a 2 inch group in my CZ452, but them hollow points are tight.
