If you are in or near Southern Sask today you know how bad the wind is here today. This morning I got up at 6am. My sister was down for a few days and headed beck to the NWT this morning at 8. Driving her in I could not see a damn thing. The normal half hour drive took one hour. I saw 7 cars in the ditch over 60 km's of hiway.
After dropping her off I was supposed to head to Saskatoon for a meeting at the Royal University Hospital, but it was so rough, I figured it wasn't worth the chance.

I thought to myself that the wind might die down later in the afternoon, and I'll head out for a coyote hunt. I needed to pick up a value pack, 45 gr JHP 22-250. After 3 walmarts and 3 canadian tires and T and T, no ammo.

What the hell is going on!!!!!!!

I bought 2 boxes of 55 gr SP Federal. It's still windy so I'm not gonna get a chance to sight in with them,..
Now if I had the JHP 45 gr I'd be all set, cause I'd I just dial in for the drift.

So with two boxes of bullets and a rifle that is not setup for them, I head out to the butcher shop and grab some real good jerky, peperoni, cheese, etc etc etc and go for a little drive.

I see 4 !!!! 4 Coyotes. 4 singles!!! I did not even think about it. I hopped out, setup the gun and got ready. two of the singles bolted and the other two simply watched me a bit before leaving. No shots fired. I'm sure one was laughing at me.

Here is the question.

Do any of you guys set up your tacticals for different bullets.

For example.

For the 45 gr JHP's I am 0" and 0"

Now lets suppose I sight in for the 55 gr SP. Record the adjustment.

Now I have two options, rather than screwed today as I was.

Anyone do this? Is this a very common thing and I'm just not aware of it.

Before the reloaders show their teeth, I don't reload..

Sure, you could record the difference in POI for a couple different loads and adjust your scope between them. Primary requirement is a quality scope with repeatability of the adjustments - you'll be lost if your scope wanders or if the adjustments are not exact and repeatable. Also, you need to remember which load you are sighted for, which can get confusing if you switch back and forth.

First you'll have to check your point of impact with the new ammo. You may be lucky and have it hitting close enough for no adjustment. I used the Winchster 45gr. factory ammo to practice and generate brass for my .22-250 and it just so happens that my favourite handload hits almost exactly 1" lower and only a hair (less than 1/2") left. So I just stay sighted in 1" high @ 100 with my handloads and the factory stuff is 2" high which is just fine for shooting at the range and even for coyotes if I was in a pinch.

Shot at a couple coyotes about two weeks ago. killed one, clipped the other with the 243 and 75 gr hollow point Hornadys.

Sorry for the reloading BS.

Thing is, the rifle is zeroed for 100 grain bullets, 1" high @ 100 yds.

The 75 gr hollow points did hit about an inch or two high but still killed the coyote.

When we're talkin about a flea bitten critter the size of a coyote, I dont think it makes a big difference on a couple inches here or there.

Specially at the closer 200 yards or less targets.

After all; considering wind, speed of animal movement, and temperature (bullets and guns and humans don't shoot the same when zeroed at+ 20 degrees Celsius, then fired at -20 degrees Celsius.)

If you know and trust you're rifle setup, I'd go with what you have and take my chances on the factory loads.:)

I'm set up for different loads. .243 Savage 12fv, 3200 bushnel fixed 10

o and o for 65 gr vmax
o and o for 95 gr sst (but that was with some powder tweaking)
0 high and 2 clicks right for 62 gr varmint grenade (again some powder tweaking)

I might just be lucky but with a few extra grains or a few less I can get these to have the same poi at 100 yards. After that is different of course. I just have it written down in the lid of my ammo box so when I grab what ever I'm shooting that day, I also have the scope dope.

I did reload for a while. I moved around so much with work though, that I offered my stuff to a friend to use when I packed up the packed up the gun room.

Even when we did reload, we didn't do it much.

I've always had great success with factory offerings and doubt that I will be reloading again anytime soon.

22-250 Federal 55 grain SP @ 100m

Took 5 shots on another target to get zero.
Finished on this target.
