coyotes during spring turkey season

id like to know what others take on this is for me I like to drop any coyote I come across. but were not allowed to carry anything bigger than #4 birdshot while turkey hunting and i will end up carrying a couple of #4 shells in my pocket while turkey hunting. the load I'm going to use for turkey is the new imperial #6 they pattern well in my old Stevens with most of the pellets being in a 12" circle at 25 yards(i know not long enough for a proper patterning shot but its all i can do at the local range).

will a 1 1/4 load of #4 bird drop a coyote at closer ranges(25y or less) or should i pass on them till im done with turkey

turkey's nest on the ground so any predator has a easy time to get to the eggs

coyotes. raccoons, squirrels etc will all eat the eggs/ chicks if parents are not around
 
Are coyotes in season during the spring turkey hunt? If so, would it be illegal to hunt both turkey and coyotes at the same time, thus allowing you to have a few buckshot on you? Does the law specifically state you may not be in possession of shot bigger than 4 while hunting turkey, or does it say you cannot hunt turkey with shot bigger than 4?

in Essex county and the rest of WMU 94 coyote is open all year turkey regulations say you can't have anything bigger than #4 birdshot on you while hunting turkey

most people tend to over do it with turkey loads I use 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 oz field loads for turkey anything else just gives more recoil and more shot that could enter the body. I will see if I can get some federal flight control loads with #4 lead
 
In my youth, I knew a young native who killed several deer at close range with #4 duck loads at 20-30 yards by shooting them in the heart when they walked by the duck blind along the riverbank. Its more than enough medicine for coyotes.

What kind of local range only allows for 25 yard shooting?

#4's will kill coyotes just fine.

In most of SW Ontario, yotes are open season all year. No tags, no limit.

Yep and #4 Turkey loads do a fine job on Coyotes. In most southern Ontario WMU's,Spring Black Bear seasons are open at the same time as Wild Turkey. That changes things considerably for which ammo may be carried without hunters needing to be in possession of a Black Bear license and tag when carrying shells #2 or larger. Turkey hunters are restricted to shot sizes of #4 to #7 specifically. LICENSED Black Bear hunters must also properly wear "hunter orange" except when in a tree stand. It's confusing and wearing orange isn't an option when hunting Turkey. For most hunters,we need to decide what you want to hunt,Bears or Turkeys. Hunting both at the same time is difficult to remain legal in all respects and still have a chance at success.

Does it have to be a stand, or would a ground blind also be an acceptable place to take off your orange while bear hunting?

im guessing that was back in the days of lead shot I would love to find some lead BB for coyote loads

I do just haven't done birdshot in a while for 12ga shot as gone up to the point where it doesn't make sense when I can get field loads for $12 to $15 a box. but I am going to start again just so I can get good patterning turkey loads and some coyote loads for the shotgun as well just need to find the shot here in Canada. also want to start playing with card wad loads and paper shot cups just because I hate leaving plastic in the field

Ballistic Products sells BB lead in 8 pound bottles and Will B can get them for you once you get going again. In fact they have most everything BBB, T ,F no.1 etc etc all in lead
Me I like no.4 buck in lead the best for coyotes.

most of the shotgun loads would be fore moments where I see a yote but only have a shotgun with me i'm building a p14 right now into a coyote rifle with 6mm Musgrave(limited to 6mm/.243 in Essex county) .bb,bbb,t,tt and f make great patterns with the right load had some old imperials loaded with bigger shot and they patterned well for the few I had. I noticed western metal has bags of copper plated ballast that's around number 2 buck in size and I may grab some of that to try just because its a decent price worse comes to worse it will end up in the lead pot
