The othter day a friend of mine shot a coyote on his property and it was acting strange it was watching him for almost 2 hours while he was doing chores around his house. His wife was the one who noticed it first but didn't say anything thinking he would notice and shoot it well it took a while but he had seen it just sitting there so he walked to the house to get his gun it was a good 200 metters away and my friend is geting on in years he shot it in the gut. He went over to make sure he hadn't wounded it but when he got there hr noticed that it had tried to eat its own entrails before it died. I myself have never heard or seen any animal do that and it kind of freaked my friend out. Has anyone ever heard of this happening or something like this ?
 
Sounds strange the ones I've seen shot either jump in a few circles and expire or run fast and hit the dirt.
 
I shot a coyote with a .17 one time, and it did the exact same thing. It probably had 12 inches of intestine down it's throat when i walked up to it and finished it off. It disturbed me quite a bit, as this was one of my first coyote kills, but since then I have seen this several times, although not quite as bad as the first time.
 
Its common for coyotes to bite and chew intestines if you wound them in that manner. Maybe they think that's what's causing the pain I don't know for sure
 
I rolled one with a .30-06 and thought he was done. Then he picked up the leg that was on the off side from the shot, and started to trot away on three legs. I have also seen then turn and bite at the wound.
 
They can't reason there guts are hanging out so they pull them out of the way,have seen that lots,eating them no.I have read somewhere there is no pain receptors in the intestines,clarification or source anyone??
 
Yeah, I think it's pretty easy to explain. The sudden pain makes him jump and look; he sees something strange attached to him where it hurts; he does what he can to make it go away because it's hurting him.

I've seen it, and I hate it when I do. I much prefer bang flops, which is why I tend to think a bit more power is a good thing in a coyote gun - fewer spinning, biting, scenes.

Ever feel a stomach cramp, an ulcer, a gall bladder attack, a kidney stone, or just post surgery consequences, or even the dry heaves? There are lots of pain receptors in organs inside your abdomen.
 
Pain receptors and their nerve pathways differ in different parts of the body. For this reason, pain sensation varies with the type and location of injury. For example, pain receptors in the skin are plentiful and capable of transmitting precise information, including where an injury is located and whether the source was sharp, such as a knife wound, or dull, such as pressure, heat, or cold. In contrast, pain receptors in internal organs, such as the intestine are limited and imprecise. The intestine can be pinched, cut, or burned without generating a pain signal. However, stretching and pressure can cause severe intestinal pain, even from something as relatively harmless as a trapped gas bubble. The brain cannot identify the precise source of intestinal pain, which is difficult to locate and is likely to be felt over a large area.

I'm forced to agree. I had a half jar of feta stuffed jalapenos a few days ago and believe me I could feel them the entire way through my intestines.... :eek:
 
Thanks everyone! I was thinking the same about the pain because they will naw off there own leg when caught in a snare but it disturbed my friend alot damn he had shot ti with a 308 but now that I know it isn't unknown it will help him out. He was just concerned because the coyote was acting strange up and until he shot it was all.
