The Papanack zoo near Ottawa had one of its lions escape over the weekend and they ended up putting it down. Second time in the last 5 or so years lions have escaped in the area (last time was near Gracefield, QC). What would be a good caliber lion gun? Would a bear defense gun be OK? Just hoping to get a lion safari close to home.

Double rifle in 375 H&H on up.

Not sure about lion hunting in an urban area lol.

Liberal media headlines...

"Cedric the lion shot and killed by cruel heartless deranged gunman in downtown Ottawa!! Public cries out for justice, gun control, and hunting bans across the nation!!"

Yeah. I see it now - Cedric kills a kid and is eating him. Animal control shows up and offs him. Liberal headlines: "Courageous lion slaughtered while enjoying his first meal as a free animal"

They typically say 338wm as a minimum dont they?

If it can close 30 yards in a few seconds and turn me into lunch, i too would be wanting a double gun though...

what a waste, surely they could have shot him with a sedative, find it hard to believe they could not, you see it all the time on nature shows, they shoot the animal, take his blood and he's back in no time, guess not in Canada

Hell a " Good Hunting Pug" would take of any ole lion that escaped from a zoo....
You seen them tackle a couple a lil ole blackies from Kalifornia haven't you?
I rest my case,
Rob

ohhhh, geez....

Apparently, sedatives take several minutes to work, and an adult lion can cause a lot of damage in several minutes. I'm sure that if there had been another safe way to do it, they would have. I imagine an adult white lion must be worth at least $20.

Apparently time didn't allow for a sedative to work.

I live very close to that zoo. There are about 8 houses across the road, and a whole small town within a 1/2km. Not much leaway for fooling around with sedatives.

That said, it's not the first lion to bust out. About ten years ago one got out and lay down on the road for a snooze. A local thought it was a deer at first until it got up and wandered into the one of the back yards across the street.

The previous owner of the zoo was a unique, no-nonsense fellow (Only know him by reputation and a couple news interviews) who took after the lion and tranquilized it. No fear that boy !

Watched them feeding lions the one time I was actually in the zoo. Meat hung up on top of a 16ft fence. Only took two jumps straight up for the lion to grab it.

I pass that place every day and am always watching for critters on the road.

A friend lives about 1km away and having coffee on the front porch one evening you could hear the lion(s) roaring. Very different.

Lets not judge the owner. Lions are interesting creatures, and I think we should trust the owner who knew the animal made the appropriate judgement call. Think about it.....he shot his own Lion, which was a money maker for the Zoo. That was not a decision taken lightly. What does a new/replacement LIVE Lion cost? $50K?? I have no clue, but it cannot be inexpensive. Lets not judge, and if you want to, log on to your PETA or SPCA website.

I hate zoos.... With a passion..... Animals caged up, not doing their natural thing so that the antis can observe them and say they saw one..... It's -4 Celsius here right now.... Many lions get subjected to that in the wild?......

So many people are anti hunting, yet willing to attend a zoo......

Don't be ridiculous. The meat from that lion will feed the local villages for the next six months.

As with everything else, there are pluses and minuses to every situation. yes, they are in captivity, but then, no predators, no illness, no starvation. Survival rate for young ones almost 20 times higher than in nature, life expectancy much longer. It's not all bad.

+1 True and what is "Natural" any longer

Yep. had that discussion with someone recently - talking about rising water levels in Northern rivers, etc. I asked the guy to point out 1 watershed that did not have dams controlling water or generating hydro somewhere down the line, and maybe then I'd make a comment one way or the other. Let's face it - we're creatures of nature ourselves, so by that yardstick, everything we do is also "natural".
