Crappy end to my deer season - break in up Chilliwack Lake Road

So this past weekend I took one last trip out for deer before the season closes. I headed up to the Chilliwack lake area, and hiked into Greendrop Lake. The parking lot for Greendrop/Lindeman lakes is closed this time of year so I was parked on the side of Chilliwack lake road. Showed up late Friday night, slept in the car, and was on my way up the trail by 7.30am.

I was shocked to see no sign at all, not a single dropping from deer or bear on my 6+km hike in and then back out. That alone made me feel like my final day of the season was terrible. Then I got back to my car before 4, only to find someone had smashed my front passenger side window! They opened the glove box, stole my phone charger and keys (not my car or house key, but the rest, gun locker/locks, shed, rooftop cargo carrier, etc) the empty rifle case on the front seat and MY ####ING CLOTHES! My duffel bag of clothes was on the front seat and the #######s stole it!

It looked like a quick job, they didn't even open a door. Just smash and grab what they could reach. I guess they didn't see any value in the sleeping bags under the clothes, or maybe their dirty thieving hands were already full... Lucky for me, they didn't see the two ammo cans in the back seat, nor did they go into the trunk where my shotgun and duffel of hunting stuff (calls, rain gear, spotting scope, etc, probably $300+ worth of random stuff) was located, but #### what a way to finish my deer season...

So needless to say I won't be hunting up that way again, and let this be a warning to anyone else who is considering it. If you leave your vehicle unattended in the Chilliwack lake area, be prepared to have your window smashed and your car robbed. I noticed two other piles of glass on the ground near my car so clearly this sort of thing isn't uncommon there...

#### thats a huge piss off. Im sorry to hear about your day. Loosing the keys is brutal.. I can’t beleive peole steal #### which is no value to them, but a massive inconvinience to you. Just people being buttholes i guess.

I hope things get better for you

Spot of bad luck and far less than ideal...

In regards to your above statement, was that something you noticed before or after this occurrence?

Did you report it to the authorities?

I noticed the glass after. I had heard rumors of this sort of thing in this area, but it was always in regards to leaving your car unattended over night (there are campsites at the lakes). I haven't reported it, because I've had my window smashed before and unless you've got video of it happening the cops don't do anything about it, they won't even come to the scene of the crime.

Too bad you hadn't returned as it was happening....

My guess is it probably happened relatively soon after I left the car. A lady was parked like 20feet from my car and hers wasn't smashed, but she wasn't there until about 11 she said, and there were like 5 other cars parked along the road at that time.

Sucks OP, thieves are scum.

I try to empty my truck as much as I can when hunting somewhere where I have to leave my truck in plain sight. I use a gun sock instead of a large case that way I can roll the gun sock and hide it under a seat.

I leave my truck bed cover unlocked as well, I've had stuff go missing from the back but no smashed window... so far... Thieves are opportunist rats who have no problem with ruining someone's day/week over a bag full of dirty undies sitting on the front seat.

I specifically left the gun case open to show its empty. Obviously that didn't do the trick... It wasn't even a nice case, it was a $15 princess auto special...

Chilliwack Lake has got bad for break ins. Too many sh!trats in town have figured out the hikers make easy prey...
Exactly this. The homeless camp at the Vedder bridge doesn't help matters either; plus it's gotten insanely popular up there. Cant blame people, it's gorgeous, but I remember not seeing a soul when we explored that valley.
When I was young we didn't give a second thought to leaving our truck and trailer parked just off the main road up there, and going dirtbiking and shooting for the day. Not so much any more.

Sorry for your loss OP, that sucks. Makes me angry at the world when I get ripped off.

It might be of value to them if they checked the address on the insurance papers and now they think they have the keys to the house.
