Thinking of picking up a Phantom 1000.
Reviews appear to be good but wanted to get all your opinions first.
Just looking for a cheaper high fps rifle for pest control in town.

Just get a RWS /Diana 34 in .177 or .22 and shoot it the rest of your life then hand it down to some for theirs.Harold...............Specialty Shooting Sports cheapest place

The phantoms were hard on seals, springs and rough operating.Difficult to keep the scope on gun and target due to the above QC issues. $250 or so for the 34 done deal.

I've heard the Nitro Venoms and Trail NPs aren't bad, except for maybe the XL versions as they're hard to #### and loud. Nice that a bunch of them come with optics, too. Can't go wrong with a Diana 34, though.

Phantom is not bad for the money. Mine was a scope killer even using 'airgun' scopes designed for the spring recoil. I only use it open sights now.

A friend has one that is not nearly as bad and he gets decent accuracy. Mine shakes itself apart even with Loctite. Not unusually for me to have to look for screws on the ground after a long session of shooting. One seems to be permanently lost.

I have a phantom 500 in .22. Tapped the bleeder hole and plugged with a grub screw, and shimmed toe spring to about .050 from coil bind when cocking. It shoots like a beast (pushing 725 depending on pellets, NOT those crappy plastic or tin ones) and is accurate enough to take crows out to 40 yards. It will hold 1.5" at 50 from a rest.

$109.99 for the gun
$0.25 for the screw
$0.00 for the scrap brass to turn a new spring guide

Good deal. I've been considering a grt trigger for it, but really, once you get used to the creepy trigger it's not too bad :)

If the 1000 is a pal rated gun then you would want .22 for sure. The extra size will reduce a lot of the self destructive tendencies for sure.

^^ self destructive tendencies? Suggesting that someone without a piece of plastic in their wallet might have the urge to shoot themself with an airgun that shoots over 500fps?

Anyway, i forgot to add, I bought a cheap ($39) centerpoint 4x32 air rifle scope on my phantom, and even with the extra juice, it has held up for nearly 3 years and probably 4000 shots fired.

I should probably mention, i gave the gun a little "tune" when i had it apart. Deburred the piston and cocking slot with sandpaper/steel wool and flattened/squared the ends of the spring on the belt sander. LIGHTLY lubed the spring and guide with motomaster moly grease and the seal with a quick squirt of aresol silicone lube. This cuts down on a lot of the "twang" in these cheaper rifles and makes them a lot nicer to shoot.

Is their really much difference in energy from .177 to .22?
I already have an old 177 so was thinking of no having to change out to new ammo. But...
It will be mostly for targets but called on for pests/hunting every now and then.

a 7.9gr .177 pellet going 1000FPS produces about 17.5 Ft.Lbf.

1 14.8gr 22 pellet going 800FPS produces about 20.3 FtLbf.

If you take into account that most guns don't shoot their advertised speed, the gap closes a little tighter. BUT!!!!!!

BUT speed/energy at the muzzle is different than the ability to carry energy over a distance. Given that the .22 pellet is twice as heavy, I find that they don't lose speed/energy as fast. My .177 guns will kill a crow with a headshot out to abotu 20-25 yards, after which they make a lot of noise and fly away. My .22 guns will take them out to 40.

Mwjones just saw that your from Huntsville, im in Burks Falls. Small world eh.
Ill have to get more in depth info on all the mods you talked about once i get a rifle.

The gun will be used for removing stray cats that are too smart for the live traps animal control is using and for partridge. My son will mostly be target shooting with it.

I was talking about scope killing and seal burning etc:)

The .22 has the prevelidge to forgive slightly bad pellet placements, because of its volume. But a pellet placement completly off coarse, out of the vital spots, wont stop the quarry from takeing off despite, the calibre used.In this category 14-16fpe,of the advertised '1000"fps airguns. The .22and the .177 do not have any jaw dropping differance in performance.I prefer the .22 in low end airguns as they seem more accurate to me.

After much debating i think ill go with .22.
The extra energy and the improved real world accuracy is appealing even if i wont be getting 1000fps with the 22
You wouldnt want a .177 at 1000fps,accuracy gos out of the door, this gun though wont give you this velocity anyway in .177 with a middle weigth pellet.

My Dad has the .22 and I have the .177. The .22 thumps cans harder while the .177 just whistles through. Other than that, they both are very strong performers on small game. Whatever floats your boat will be fine.

Heard it's bad luck to shoot and kill cats, especially the smart ones.

It could be wiser to stick to targets just like you son. Just my $.02
