When competing in the U.S. as a Canadian, can I legally purchase ammo and high capacity mags from gun shops?

Of course, they wouldn't be brought back home with me across the border.

Your Form 6NIA allows you to purchase ammo, but getting the mags depends on the State you are in.

Remember ammo requires an export permit that can take up to 3 months to get.

The ammo and mags I would purchase would be used strictly for competition in the U.S. and not be imported into Canada.

The F6NIA is a permit for the temporary importation of firearms and ammunition. Nothing else.

Read all the conditions on the permit... 'Nothing there saying the F6NIA allows you to buy ammunition.
There are two exemptions though, but an F6NIA is not one of them.

That is true except it also allows you to purchase ammo. Been there done that on producing the permit. I have spoken the the agent in charge in Albany NY.

It’s best to consult the law rather than speak to a border agent.

There is no requirement for a non resident to have a form 6 when buying ammo. There are other requirements but like 667 said, a form 6 isn’t one of them

To the op, you’ll be totally fine if you don’t bring them back. Just be careful about which states you cross into when you have high cap mags with you

I would only buy the high cap mags and ammo in the state where I was competing. Do Americans have to show ID when purchasing ammo and/or mags? If not, by paying in cash I don't see how the store would even know I'm Canadian... unless I slip up and say "Thanks eh"!

Well there it is... NY
We probably need a permit to purchase toilet paper.

IMHO just an official making #### up. Nowhere on, in or around the entire BATFE F6NIA does it say anything about the permit being for NIA's to purchase anything.
It's a federal document authorizing temporary importation on firearms and ammunition by NIA's. That's it.
Having to produce a F6NIA to purchase ammo would be like having to show your drivers lic. to buy gasoline.

If you buy gear and ammo down there and leave it down there, I don’t see a problem. I’m sure your USD is just as good as an American’s!
Obviously buying an actual firearm is verboten but other stuff, why not? Especially if they’re not coming home with you. You’re just stimulating the State economy!

The agent in charge was BATFE not Border Services.

I'm bringing my SLR down in December with zero mags. Buy two Pmags at Academy and leave em there. If I'm in the land of the free and home of the brave, you bet your a$$ I'm using full capacity mags! :)
